I got out of bed this morning just before 4:30 A.M.
That's about two hours before sunrise
this time of year.
The snow was coming down as Steve
left for work in the dark of night.
It was around 7:30 when I took these photos.
No flash on the camera.
The snow was reflecting the blue of the sky.
It was a softer, lighter blue than showed
up in the photos . . . but blue none the less.
Do you remember any of the stories of
Paul Bunyan?
maybe this one . . .
Babe & The Blue Ox
Well now, one winter it was so cold
that all the geese flew backward and
all the fish moved south
and even the snow turned blue.
Late at night,
it got so frigid that all spoken words
froze solid afore they could be
heard.
People had to wait until sunup to find out what folks
were
talking about the night before...
Does this make you want to read them again.
Great winter stories to read to your grandchildren.

Your blogging sister,
Connie
Such beauty in the early hours, it makes you want to get up just to capture it all.
ReplyDeleteIt was very pretty, but also very slick. My poor husband was out driving around the county to see whether it would be safe to have their trucks on the road. After seeing a few early morning accidents, they called a snow day . . . no work today.
DeleteI love snow when we are skiing, but we haven't gone in 2 years - very poor skiing for the past few years. One of my favorite memories is of a Christmas morning about 2006 when we were snowed in the entire day. Snow was halfway up the door. For southern California beach bums, it was magical.
ReplyDeleteEven when you live in the north . . . snow has a magical affect on you . . . especial when you don't have to drive to work in it, LOL.
DeleteIt just seems that all the world is pure and clean and on those days when it sparkles . . . pure magic :)
Connie, It's been so long since I heard about Paul Bunyan...So funny. I don't want any more snow...but it's coming. Be safe. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteHi Susie, we had such a dry hot summer that we can use it . . . the earth around here is so thirsty :)
DeleteOh!!! So pretty! I'm a tiny bit jealous... I love snow! I love the quiet it leaves behind. It rarely snows here but when it does, you'll find me in it! I bet this is helping the Christmas spirit settle in :-)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! We have lights out on the fence in front of the house and on the light post, but they didn't really have that Christmasy feeling until they were accompanied with snow :)
DeleteA winter wonderland....so nice to be snug inside. I love seeing your decorations in the previous post too. I like looking out a window and having pretties on the windowsill. Holiday hugs, Diane
ReplyDeleteHi Diane, me too! Whether it is winter, spring, summer or fall, I like decorating my window sill. After all I spend a lot of time at that window :)
DeletePretty snow images! Fun story too. We are in the middle of an ice storm here on the farm. I think I will do some knitting and stay home by the fire. Stay warm!

Hi Teresa, Staying home by the fire sounds like the perfect way to spend a day during an ice storm . . . stay warm sister :)
DeleteSo beautiful. I love calm mornings like this! Or...I would, if it would snow here!;-)
ReplyDeleteThere is something about the snow that not only makes the earth white and beautiful, but it also brings with it a calming silence :)
DeleteI always loved those stories, Connie. Those are great pictures...I can feel the COLD from here. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteHi Diana, today it is warming up and our snow is turning to slippery shush . . . we must be careful where we step . . . falling down at our age is out a pleasant thing. Needless to say, my snow-angel making days are over, LOL.
DeleteA beautiful sight to see from the warmth of your kitchen but it does look really blue & cold!
ReplyDeleteStay cozy!
It has been cold and I am trying to get over a head cold, so staying warm is on my To Do List, LOL. Dressing in layers is my best solution :)
DeleteWhat lovely pictures. They give such a sense of atmosphere. The Christmas lights look so cozy against all the cold blue.
ReplyDeleteHi thank you for stopping by and visiting. Those lights really look pretty at light; also just before the snow we got our nativity out in the lawn . . . it looks lovely sitting there in a blanket of white :)
DeleteOh no, snow. It looks cold. Someone said today that it was supposed to snow here but thankfully it didn't. I'm not ready for it.
ReplyDeleteI do remember Paul Bunyan and Babe and the Blue Ox. I got a good laugh reading that
Hi Ann, it sounds like a great story for a cold winter night . . . even if you're all grown up, something I hope to never fully be, LOL.
DeleteSome lovely photo's here Connie ... so often the snow does give an almost blue hue.
ReplyDeleteI used to love sharing books with my children, I now enjoy them with the grandchildren, so special to be able to do this.
A slight change of subject here ... but you raised some questions on one of my recent blog posts, I did answer them, hope you saw them here

I also did a post on Egg fu yung here

Enjoy your December, it's such a special month isn't it.
All the best Jan
Hi Jan, it is so sweet of you to send me a link . . . I will be going there as soon as I read and answer my lovely comments. In the summer eating low carb was much easier . . . we had a wonderful garden . . . now I'm searching for variety. I hate falling into a food eating rut.
DeleteBeautiful photos Connie! I love fresh snow.
ReplyDeleteIt is so pretty isn't it :)
DeleteOh Connie, your snow is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat it is . . . but it's cold, too! I love that I don't have to go out in it unless I choose to, but my poor husband has to drive it everyday. It will be nice when he's retired and sitting here with me all warm, cozy and safe :)
DeleteWhat a lovely sight to wake up to! I don't love cold weather, but I do love snow. I am hoping so badly to see some while I am in Prague. Your photos are so pretty...just magical! I hope you have a wonderful day my friend.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Vicky
Hi Vicky, I don't know much about the weather there, but I am thinking that they get lots of snow. Hopefully if you don't pack the right clothes, you can borrow from your daughter . . . or go shopping . . . that might be fun, but I'm sure that you are spending a lot on your tickets already. I hope that you take lots of photos while you are there and that she has plenty of time off work to tour the area with you. It's going to be so exciting! Have you ever been to Europe before? Oh, a hint: leggings, they don't take up much room in a suitcase and they are great for layering under pants and skirts. Layering is the answer to staying warm :)
DeleteThey do get lots of snow in December and January so I'm hoping! I have actually been buying some winter clothes and you must have read my mind because I bought 3 pairs of leggings as well as some turtelneck type shirts to layer under sweaters and tops. I found an awesome down coat that is so soft and it came with a bag that matches that you can ball it up in and toss in a shoulder bag. It is going in my carry on since I will be leaving from Tampa with temps possibly in the 80's and arriving to temps possibly in the 20's! I am thinking ahead. It has been fun gathering things for this once in a lifetime trip!.:) I will most definitely be taking LOTS of pictures to share! I have never been to Europe so this is quite special for this old country girl! I am so excited. And, Miranda is off work the whole time I will be there!
DeleteOh Connie, now that was such a sweet post. I think you are right about the Paul Bunyan books. They would be fun to read to grands! You and your hubs make an adorable couple! He's TALL! Susan
ReplyDeleteHi Susan, He 6'3" but I'm only 5'4" so we do have a difference going on. In fact you know how we get shorter as we get older . . . I could be shorter by now, but I don't want to know the answer to that, LOL.
DeleteHi Connie,
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos!
It's so pretty when the sky is so bright like that and the snow is coming down.
Love the pinecones and fabric balls hanging in your window!
Have a wonderful rest of your week!
Hugs, Kimberley
Hi Kimberley, thank you for visiting and for your sweet comments. The towel you sent me is getting tucked away nicely and will come out again next fall. Thank you again . . . it's a very sweet gift and I love it :) Happy Holidays!
DeleteHi! Beautiful! Do you go back to bed after getting up so early? We got just a few snow flurries today but it will probably be coming this way. I remember stopping to see Babe and the Blue Ox on the way to Alpena, Michigan but have never read the story. I need to do that!!!! You and Steve stay safe! Nancy
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy, The only time that I would go back to bed is if I'm not well. I love getting up early and getting my chores done. This week I have been getting up early and then my 8:30/ 9:30 I'm out in my Art Barn quilting. I have three quilts with deadlines . . . so I must keep those finger flying, LOL.
DeleteWhat an example you are Connie!!!!!! May God give you lots of blessings this Christmas! Nancy
DeleteYou were up way too early! I always thought it was amazing how snow looks blue too, especially after you see it on film or on digital images. But yet it doesn't look that way when you're outside. I wonder why? I'll have to ask my son who's the professional photographer. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHi Melanie, I think it has to do with the reflection of the sky. It has the same affect on water. Have you noticed that when you take photos of a lake, sometimes the water looks blue and sometimes it looks green . . . then sometimes it sparkles and looks light and other times it look foreboding and dark?
DeleteLovely blue photos Conneie - and very apt for the picture content! I don't envy you your snow, but it really does look picturesque! Lxx
ReplyDeletePretty to look at, but maybe not so pretty to walk or drive in, LOL.
DeleteThere is always something special about the first snowfall of the year. I love that muffledl silence that comes with it, as though the earth is quietly waiting for something. Your pictures are lovely.
DeleteOh, I do love snow. We rarely see it here, but when it does fall, it's like magic. The whole world is transformed into fairy land. What beautiful photos you've shown us. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteHi Lorrie, snow does have a fairyland feel, especially this time of the year, around Christmas :) I'm delighted that you enjoyed the photos.
DeleteHave a great weekend :)
The early morning, the snow, and the blue...it looks so quiet and cold. Gave me a chill. It's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI know . . . next summer when it's hot, I'll have to go back and look at these photos :)
DeleteOh my the pictures are so pretty, so neat to capture that!!
ReplyDeleteHi Connie, it was just so still and picture perfect outside . . . it might have been better to go outside and take the photos, but I was still in my PJ's, LOL.
DeleteWell, yes, you've done it! Now I want to read Paul Bunyan again. I love what you shared. And I love morning light on snow. So beautiful. xo ~ Nancy
ReplyDeleteI can not remember what grade I was in, I'm thinking maybe the 4th grade, when our teacher read us the Paul Bunyan books . . . they were written so well, you could close your eyes and be there with the characters.
