I so agree........they do smell heavenly! I had a lilac bush growing by my bedroom window when I was a teenager. I would lift my window and the breeze would blow the fragrance through my room. I loved it!
You are lucky to inherit such nice lilac bushes. Your white looks like a double.. it could be a Hulda Klager variety. You should ask the previous owners what variety they are. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
Hi Teresa, the owner that planted these died many years ago and this place was purchased my someone who used it as a rental . . . part of the reason for the neglectful shape that it was in when we bought it. As you said . . . I feel truly blessed my these bushes and very grateful for them. Lilacs have been a favorite of mine since childhood, but I have never had any before. Now I have them to look forward to each Spring :)
Do you pick some for in the house? I love bouquets picked from garden flowers and want to have something blooming although the spring and summer to pick for in the house. When I was a child growing up in Indiana I was always picking my Momma bouquets of wild flowers.
I love the scent of lilacs...wish there blossoming season lasted longer. My lilacs are about done until next year, there are only a few high up in the tall bushes. Enjoy the upcoming week, Connie.
Hi Marigene, thanks for stopping by to visit. We have one snowball bush that is just starting to bloom . . . it usually comes on just as the lilacs stop . . . so they will be my next bouquet. I love bringing garden bouquets into the house and never was much of a florist shop bouquet lover. I wish tulips and lilacs lasted a bit longer, too, but maybe the fact that they don't makes them all the more special.
Hi Connie - I have a big patch of Lilies of the Valley right by my door and every time I walk out it has the sweetest smell. Hadn't thought about it but maybe it is the smell of Heaven!
Hi Judy, oh I love Lilies of the Valley, too. I am sure that heaven is filled with these glorious smells. This will be our third summer here in our little country home. Each year I have planted roses and I believe that this will be my year to actually have many of them blooming throughout the summer. I was just reading last night about hybrid flowers vs. the heirloom flowers and how the hybrid flowers may produce bigger and more abundant flowers but that they also have lost all or most of their aroma through this process. The red rose that I picked to bring into the house the other day, had no smell at all. It will be interesting to see which of my roses do and don't have that lovely rosie smell.
I love flowers that bloom all year, but it is nice having some that you look forward to their loveliness with more expectation, I think because they are only here for a short while. I purchased a couple of the new "Knock Out Roses" they are beautiful flowers and promise to bloom from spring to frost . . . the only downfall is that they have been crossed so many times to create this rose, that the glorious flower has lost it's scent, poor thing :(
We have only one little lilac, that really needs to be moved, but long before I was born, mother and daddy had a great conversation if it really was a lilac--chalk one up for momma...lol have a great week.
You could be right. Lilacs run a close race with hyacinths for me. When I was growing up we had several very large lilac bushes and I always loved the scent. Over the years I've tried several times to grow a lilac bush with no luck. Every single one I've planted has died. I have to settle for admiring the ones growing around the neighborhood
Hi Ann, we are alike in our ability to grow lilac brushes. I tried many times at our other house with no luck at all . . . so you can understand how delighted I was to find that I had many well established ones growing here at our new home :)
Hi Connie! Love lilacs so much. My parents had a gorgeous trio of lilacs just outside my bedroom window - amazing in the spring. We have an out of control lilac in our front yard that really needs to be taken out, I just haven't had the heart to do it! Jane
Oh, I understand your stress at taking it out. My brother and sister-in-law had a beautiful one that was huge growing outside their bedroom window when I was a child, but it had grown into the septic system somehow and was causing problems. It was a sad day when it was removed.
I'm sure you are right, Connie! It is the most beautiful fragrance...My Mum loved it and used to say it was 'heavenly' and I think she meant it quite literally : )
Yes! Heavenly is what I think of when I smell lilacs! I have no lilacs this year...the warm/cold/warm/cold weather bouncing back and forth froze the buds! How beautiful! You have white and purple! Andrea
I love lilacs also and my first thought was to go buy a bush to plant! Then reality hit and I remembered we have taken out of our yard about 10 bushes to make our yard more manageable due to Bob's neuropathy and back problems. So I will just enjoy other people's lilac bushes! Lavender color is my favorite. Love the smell of them and also lily-of-the valley. Keep enjoying and thanks for sharing! Nancy
I love Lilacs but don't have any. I keep meaning to plant one. Your potting shed (last post) is adorable! Sure looks like you have been starting seeds for a long time. You are so smart!!
Oh, this is my first year doing this . . . I am taking lots of notes and writing down everything that works well and everything that doesn't. Up until this point I have always purchased plants, except for the seeds that you sow in the ground after frost. The garden this summer will be my third garden . . . each year they get bigger and bigger. Having a garden and grocery shopping in the backyard brings a whole new joy to summertime :)
We have three lilacs, all planted by us, in various stages of development. The scent of the blossoms is indeed a heavenly one! Gorgeous arrangement in the crock.
Good Morning Lorrie, thanks for dropping by. Lilacs are among my favorite flowers and I felt so blessed when I saw that this property had so many well established bushes. They are delightful is beauty and in scent :) I hope that you are enjoying yours.
I have some Knock Out Roses in bloom right now . . . they are lovely and bloom from spring until frost, but this hybrid variety has no scent . . . what a shame, right? From everything that I have been reading on gardening, it's the old fashioned Heirloom Roses that have the most scent. I have a few Blaze Climbers that I planted the first year we moved here. This will be their third summer and they should do well this year . . . I am hoping that they will smell wonderful and give that old fashioned beauty of roses climbing along my fence line :)
Hi Laurie, this is such a surprise. Living in South Carolina, I am sure that there are Lilacs. You must fine a yard with some . . . the way you love taking beautiful photos of flowers, I would say that you need to make this one of your goals for next Spring. You are much warmer than us, so yours have probably already bloomed and faded. They have about a two to three week season of blooming. It's a small goal, but as you will find, well worth it :)
Lilacs could be my favorite flower, Connie. I know it's in the top 10. How nice that you had lilacs on your property when you bought it. Enjoy that scent! Hugs, Nancy
Hi there Sweetie Pie, You know, ours usually don't bloom until the first of May, but they came early this year. One of my nieces got married on May 3 and I remember her wedding anniversary because she had Lilacs in her wedding bouquets. Ours are starting to fade . . . it's a shame they don't last just a bit longer.
I so agree........they do smell heavenly! I had a lilac bush growing by my bedroom window when I was a teenager. I would lift my window and the breeze would blow the fragrance through my room. I loved it!
ReplyDeleteOh my! What a wonderful place to plant a lilac bush . . . I think that would guarantee sweet dreams :)

DeleteBeautiful, beautiful lilacs such a shame they don't bloom all year, but then I suppose we wouldn't love their smell so much.

ReplyDeleteTruly they are . . . and so beautiful in every way :)
DeleteLilacs are just wonderful blooms...
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
There is something quite lovely about them and their perfume brings lovely memories of childhood to my mind :)

ReplyDeleteSomething that I noticed this year, is that my white lilacs have a stronger perfume than the purple. This was a surprise to me.

DeleteLilacs and Roses rank right up there as far as scent is concerned and looks too. Heaven may very well smell like those too smells. Have a great week.
