What Are Children Reading These Days?

Doing a book review is not something
I would normally do in my blog.
😊
As some of you know,
our daughter and granddaughters came to visit
at Thanksgiving.  During their visit we
went to our local library.
I would say that it doesn't matter where
they are, going to the library is second nature
to them, like breathing:)
πŸ“•πŸ‘“πŸ“—πŸ“–πŸ“˜πŸ“•πŸ‘“πŸ“—πŸ“–πŸ“˜
This particular book is one that my oldest granddaughter
 age ten has read twice
and she wanted to check it out again,
while she was here.
After she left, I decided that I wanted to read it
and see just what kind of books this sweet girl likes
to read and why she liked it so much
that she would read it again and again.

 Well, I was pleasantly surprised.
The story is very uplifting,
but about making the most out of
not so uplifting circumstances.
  The vocabulary
 and content far exceeds anything
that I would have read at age ten.
I'm very proud of these girls,
and their Mama . . .
she is the cornerstone to them
being such good (great) readers.

She has read them bedtime stories every night
since birth and now at bedtime they take turns
picking a book and reading it out loud to each other.

That was how Abbey read this book for the second time . . .
she picked it as one of her read aloud books,
because she had enjoyed it so much
and wanted to share it with her Mama and sister.

It's one of those books that you will pick up
and not want to put down until you've finished it :)

Do you wonder what your grandchildren are reading?
πŸ“ž πŸ“ž
I found it to be very interesting
&
it was something fun to discuss
when I talked with her on the phone
the other night :)

I'm hoping to have some time out in
my Art Barn today.
I'm starting a new quilt project :)

Keep Smiling!
Your blogging sister,
Connie :)

  1. Thanks for sharing this book. I'll be looking into getting it for a couple of our grands who are good readers and about the same age. Happy quilting!

    1. I'm out in my barn right now, just taking a little break. I've started on a cowgirl themed quilt, using a Moda layer cake that I purchased last spring. Thanks for dropping by to say hi . . . I enjoy the company :)

  2. This is very encouraging! I love reading and am glad your girls want to read as these days computer games etc are more a distraction than an educational tool.

    1. Tell me about it, we feel very fortunate that our girls all love to read. They plow through books like I plow through cheese cake, LOL

  3. Its a tradition that we started many years ago reading to each other. I am thrilled to say that my daughters now do that with their own children. Hope you manage to get out to your Art Barn. Take care.

    1. I am in the Art Barn right now, just taking a little break and trying to decide which fabric to pick next for the quilt that I'm working on. It's cold outside, so I have my little fireplace going and it's cozy in here. I may not want to walk across the yard and back to the house. I love my barn! Thanks for popping in to say ha . . . I hope that you are having a great day, too :)

  4. It's amazing what levels of reading children are introduced to in school these days. Many Kindergarten children are reading books by the end of the school year that go way beyond what I was reading in the beginning of second grade! My memories of kindergarten are of graham crackers and naps. The alphabet didn't come along until first grade. (Now I am dating myself! LOL!) Your grandchildren are so fortunate to have a mom that introduced them to reading at an early age. I am looking forward one day to being able to read to my first grandchild due in the next couple of weeks.

    1. I am so happy for you . . . grandchildren are wonderful. As far as reading goes, if they are good readers there is no stopping them as far as learning. Our oldest granddaughter is saving to buy a bunny, so she has been reading everything that she can get her hands on about rabbits. She could probably teacher a class to veterinarians on rabbit health and care, LOL.

  5. For as many years as I can remember reading was part of our family, we all shared quiet reading times and now it is our childrens turn to do this with their children.
When we see the grand-children books always come out to share ... long may this continue.

Enjoy your time in the Art Barn

    All the best Jan

    1. That's great to hear. I worry that with all the new tech books like Kindle (and I have to admit that I love my Kindle) that libraries will become a thing of the past. That would be a heart breaker.

  6. I don't have any grandchildren and my grand cats can't read...lol

    1. Sorry about both of those . . . have you tried teaching the cat to read? :)

  7. I need to read this to my grandkids. They spend too much time on their kindles and I like it when I see them reading a real book! Looking forward to see your new quilt. I am sure it will be so nice! Nancy

  9. Of course I just had to request that book from the library. I find my grands read a wide variety of books but mainly the "Harry Potter" sort.

    1. I know my 10 year old granddaughter has read the whole series of Harry Potter. Then she found that they wrote a play and she read that too. Lately she has started enjoying science fiction, I think she gets that from her grandpa, LOL.

  10. Sounds like a good book. : )
I read all the time and read to my two kids from the time they were tiny. One is a reader and one isn't.

    1. Some people develop a love for reading later in life, there's still hope for the one that isn't, LOL. The truth is there is so much on the TV and computer these days, that most people are not readers any more. It is just such a quiet retreat . . . a sweet break from all the noise of our world :)

  11. Smart thing to do... to get that book and read it! I think I would do the same, but don't have any grandchildren so don't get the pleasure of reading to/with them. My mom always read to us 4 girls growing up. I remember she had an entire set of those orange Childcraft books which I loved! They were full of such wonderful stories and pictures. Many got passed on to me when I had two small boys, and I read to them all the time from those. They both loved them too. My mom went to the library, I went to the library growing up (and still do! - no Kindle for me) and my boys went to the library. I still love going in and smelling those book smells. I hope real books never go away. I much prefer a real book and not looking at a little screen, though I must admit, would be easier to read in bed with a small Kindle, etc. Glad you got to your art barn today and I bet that quilt will be beautiful! I have tons of "cowboy" and "cowgirl" fabrics.... sitting and waiting for me to make shirts.. but I may have to change my way of thinking and make a quilt or wall hanging instead! Hubby wants a shirt for Christmas... hum.m.m.m..... I just don't sew clothes much anymore. Take care and hope you can hole up in your studio all weekend! Let the snows fly, right? (not)... Marilyn

    1. Hi Marilyn, I got my quilt started. I'm making a "quilt as you go" design, so it's fun to watch the process and plan the next move. I went to town yesterday and bought a piece of black and white polka dot to use in it. I have a lot of stashed fabric, but the polka dot seems to be what this quilt was asking for, LOL. Have you ever sewn a "quilt as you go"? Years ago I made all my clothes, but not anymore, but then years ago I had a body that looked good in about anything . . . not anymore, LOL. Now I dress to camouflage :)
      Have a happy day.

    2. I haven't done a quilt as you go, but have wanted to. I've saved some YouTube videos on how to do it, plus I have a book from probably 25 years ago that I got on how to do it! sometimes a quilt just "asks us" to add something extra doesn't it? And yes, I made almost all my clothes too in my teens and 20's... and I did have a good figure back then! I've attempted to make a top now and then, but for some reason, they don't want to fit right anymore! I need and would love a dress form as I hate fitting things on myself! I'm just not patient enough to do alot of the detailed sewing like I used to. Any quilts I make will have to be fairly simple and easy too. Enjoy your Sunday.

    1. Friday I got out there and spend most of the day, it was wonderful. I started a western cowgirl themed quilt that I am making as a "quilt as you go". Have you ever made one of these?

  13. I loved reading as a child and I think it is so important. They say if a child can read good they will do well in pretty much everything. Fun idea to see what she was reading!

  14. thanks for the book recommendation. I actually checked it out at my library and was quite surprised how much I enjoyed it. I couldn't imagine reading this at ten years old though. I have a nine year old grandson so I may buy it for him and hopefully he will like it as much as I did. Thanks again! Keep on creating!
