Thrifting At It's Best :)

 It rained here during the night . . .
and the morning air smells like heaven :)
Hallelujah!!!
~~~~~*****~~~~~
Going to yard sales and thrift stores
can be so much fun . . .
especially when you find treasures:)
This dresser scarf was "Free".
How's that for a bargain?
It's hand embroidered and hand crocheted:)
Free again.
What you need to know is that they were
covered in rusty stains,
but I managed to get them out:)
Pillowcase . . . Free.
Pillowcase . . . Free.
Free again . . .
I love the edging on this one.
It reminds me of my Mamma; she loved
crocheting with variegated threads.
Okay, I finally had to put out some money.
I bought this hand-quilted Log Cabin
quilt for $20.
I looks so pretty in my pink bedroom:)
 I could not believe the $20 price tag . . .
but didn't hesitate adding it to my shopping cart.
I may go thrifting for another year or more,
and never find another score like this.
~~~~~*****~~~~~
I'm very happy with my treasures.

~~~~~*****~~~~~
Keep smiling.
Connie :)
  1. Oh so pretty, Connie! You have a real eye for a bargain and for beautiful things. I can't believe they were giving away those wonderful pieces of vintage embroidery... So much work. Not a style done much today but I remember the transfers and the stranded cottons we used to use, to make things just like this!
    1. Those pillow cases and table scarves when in a big box of things that had been water damaged and stained. When she say no charge, I was surprised and ready to get home and see if I could get the stains out. To my good fortune everything came out beautifully :)
    1. Hi, I put Clorox2 on the strains and rubbed them in and let stand for about 15 minutes before washing. It worked great:)
  3. Love all the vintage linens and that quilt is just gorgeous! What did you use to get the rust out? Do you have any tricks for getting the yellow stains out that old linens have? I have had some success getting them out but they seem to come back over time. Hope you have a lovely week my friend!
I like having a bedroom that reminds me of my childhood . . . when times were simpler and sleep came easy every night. Children don't realize and appreciate the freedom of being a child . . .until we are all grown up with tons of responsibilities :)
  4. Hi Connie! Wow! You sure found some wonderful treasures at wonderful bargains!! How did you get the rust out. I bet if the people giving them away would have known how they would not have parted with them. I love that sort of things! You know how much work into that quilt and what a bargain you got. Great day you had! Nancy
    1. That is certainly right :) Why, I have paid more than that for the batting to put into a quilt. The fact that it was hand-quilted instead of machine quilted was a real treat, too :)
  16. WOW, what a lucky find to get all those things for free. They look brand new. I don't know what they looked like with their rusty stains but you did a great job of cleaning them. You must be a laundry genius :) That quilt is really nice too. I haven't been thrifting in quite a while.
    1. Hi Ann, it was a great day for thrifting!
      When we moved in and I cleaned up the old bathtub a friend told me to try Clorox2. I did and it didn't help at all in the tub, but on these pillowcases it worked like a gem, it took all the rusting old stains out and without fading any of the embroidery :)
  17. Wow! a hand quilted quilt for $20 is an amazing find. And how wonderful to be able to get the stains out of your linen pieces. My mom still has some lovely linens, hand embroidered and given to her by old friends that she treasures and uses.
    1. Good Morning! I was fortunate that all the stains came out. I really doubted that they would, at least this good for sure. I used Clorox2, they came out and without fading any of the embroidery. I love them on the bed and plan on using them, not hiding them away on a shelf. Nothing beats crisp white linens on the bed . . . especially when you dry them in the sun:)
  19. Connie, what beautiful things you have found! I just love old embroidered dresser scarfs. Would you tell your secret for getting out stains? I paid 2.00 for a box of embr oidered scarves and pillowcases that had lots of stains. I love visiting your blog, but I am behind with everything! We've had company since Friday.
    1. Hi, and thanks for stopping by. Enjoy your company . . . your blogging sisters all have lives and understand. Enjoying life, family and friends is much more important than sitting in front of the computer. This is what I did to get my stains out. I put Clorox2 on the strains and rubbed it into them and let stand for about 15 minutes before washing. It worked great:) One of the stains I rubbed so hard that I made a hole . . . but that's okay . . . they're vintage and you don't expect them to be perfect. I love having vintage pillowcases on my bed along with sun dried sheets.
  20. Hi Connie!
    What wonderful finds! What is your secret to getting out the stains? I haven't been to my local thrift store in months and I'm really feeling a withdrawal. Tee hee. The quilt is absolutely beautiful and I can see why you paid only $20 for it. What a great find.
    Your pink room is coming along nicely; as I'm sure the rest of your home and especially your craft barn.
    I am finally starting to feel like a real person and I'm going to physical therapy twice a week. I still take pain meds when I go to PT but other than that I'm taking tylenol.
You will soon be better than ever and the next thing I'll hear is that you're taking tango lessons :) As for the stains in my vintage pillowcases I used Chorlox2, I rubbed it into them and let them stand for about 15 minutes before washing. It worked great:)
  21. blasts from the past for me!! my mom did that type of needlework, doilies, pillowcases and shirts. as i look at these pieces of art, they are artwork, i think about who may have stitched them, who they were made for?? i am also so happy that someone appreciated them enough to NOT throw them out.
    the quilt also brought back memories, from my days of quilting, when my babies were babies!!! it's a beauty!!!!
  22. Hi Connie, thanks for stopping by my blog. I don't do the 'following' thing, but will be checking your blog often, as I see that you, like me, are into thrifting and handcrafting:) Those are quite the finds you got, love the embroidery. Often it is quite easy to clean and restore things to their former beauty, and then you have a real treasure. One of my best buys was a king size down duvet that had been relegated to the 'moving blankets' bin, because it was all brown and stained. It was 50 cents. I washed it with vinegar and finished drying it on the clothes line. It came out nice and white and we used it on the bed all winter.
