Scarecrows In The Garden

Do you put a scarecrow in your garden
to protect your plants from the birds?

Do you think they really work?

This one is in the blackberry patch.

This one is in my tomato patch.

And this one is in the raspberry patch.

I'm not sure if they work,
but they are fun to make.

And they give the garden a little bit of whimsy :)

My morning glories are going crazy . . .

and I love it!

I was afraid that they would never bloom,
but last week they surprised me.

Wait a minute now . . .
that's not a scarecrow . . .
or maybe it is, LOL.

We have been having a lot of smoke from
forest fires north of us . . .
this is what the smoke does to a sunset :)

Well, that's my post for today.
Thank you for visiting.

  1. Ha-ha,I like your sense of humor. Unfortunately, my husband does not have one where scarecrows are concerned. I think they are fun, but he tore mine down. :-( Of course, if mine had had a bright smile and beautiful long hair.....
    Love those zinnias.

    1. I am sorry to hear that. I think that some people associate them with evil . . . I think that it is a matter of the heart and the reason that you put them up. If you are putting them up to make your garden look cute, and scare off the birds from eating your plants . . . I don't see any harm. If you have evil intentions, then of course it's a bad thing . . . just like anything else in life. I'm sure that your scarecrow was meant for no harm, just as mine are not meant for harm. Thank you for your sweet words about my smile, I appreciate it :)

  2. I thought that scarecrow. really looked realistic! Great idea. It may not scare the birds, but it is really a great idea.

  4. HI Connie! Yes, I DO have a scarecrow. I bought her at Walmart and dolled her up a bit. I really put her out in the wild garden for looks, but I have noticed the magpies are staying away from the suet now. Yay! I welcome the downy woodpeckers and the chickadees.
Ha! I knew that was you. You aren't scary!

  5. Your yard and gardens and flowers are simply beautiful! I LOVE the scarecrows, and when I saw the one wearing the white jacket, I thought, WOW, she did a great job! This one looks so graceful. What a surprise! I love it! Never have I seen a sunset like that!

    1. Oh, When I first saw that sunset it was so much more brilliant in color, but by the time I ran in and got my camera it looked like this photo. The smoke in the air has a lot to do with the redness.

  6. You didn't fool ME! I knew that was you! heehee! I love it! You are the prettiest scarecrow in the history of scarecrows! And what an amazing sunset. Hope those fires are under control soon! Hugs!

    1. Thank you for your sweet comment. I do hope these fires are out soon too. Our daughter and granddaughters live in an area where they are telling them to stay inside or wear masks if they must go outside. The air quality is terrible there. We have had some bad days, but nothing that bad.

  8. Your garden is amazing, Connie. I have one small basil plant and a patch of spearmint, both of which come up each year on their own! I do have morning glories and zinnias thanks to my green-thumbed husband and his seed packets though! Cute scarecrows...especially that last one! 😉

  12. No, I don't have scarecrows in my gardens and I don't think the help but I sure liked seeing yours.
And that one looks so life like. 😊
You have the coolest yard. I bet you have people stop and take pictures of it. I know I would.

    1. What can I say . . . I love my garden! Even though it is getting over run with weeds. With all the canning and sewing that I've been trying to get done, I just don't have time to weed. So, I surrendered and threw in the white towel, LOL

  15. Hi Connie, Everything in your yard is so beautiful! You look so cute as a scarecrow!! I love zinnias but didn't get any planted this year. Next year!!! Can't believe our gardening season is winding down. Bought Mums for the front porch today. Thanks for sharing your beautiful place! Nancy

    1. Hi Nancy, I got a surprise package in the mail today . . . I wonder what my sweet blogging sister is up to. It says that I can't open it until Friday. So, Friday morning it is . . . thank you, you are so sweet.
P.S. I love Mums, they are so pretty and they make me think of fall and football :) I think the football thing has to do with my brother playing high school football and I'm not sure if it was homecoming or what but there was always a game when everyone wore mum corsage in school colors.

  16. Your scarecrows are a delight but I did think that a certain one was too realistic to be a genuine scarecrow!
Your garden is so colourful and still going strong even if August is fast coming to an end!

  17. Fun post, my garden isn't really big enough for a scarecrow but I do love them!! You have a nice variety and one of them is so life like ;) LOL!
So sorry to hear the smoke is still a problem, with all the news from Hurricane Harvey we don't hear about much else around the country.

    1. We have had a couple weeks with less smoke than earlier in the month, but tonight it is suppose to get really bad. Breathing smokey air is no fun, but I'll take it over a hurricane any day :)

  20. Hi Connie! :))) I found you through Sam I Am's blog roll. Very fun post! I had a feeling that scarecrow wasn't on the up and up lol! Very cute. I had lofty goals to make a few scarecrows for my garden this year, but it never happened. Maybe next summer I'll have more time! My morning glories are really climbing, but no blooms as of yet. Glad I found you! :) Rain

    1. They say that squirrels can be a huge problem. We had them at our old house and we loved watching them and would even put out feed. We didn't have a garden there so that might be why we enjoyed them so much. I would hate to have any critters mess with my garden.

  24. I KNEW that was you in the white shirt! hee hee...... beautiful pictures and love love love your garden and morning glories! Wow. My internet is down... am at the library so late in commenting...... can't do a blog post until next week... I'm going through internet withdrawals! I've never used scarecrows.... yours are so fun. My huge gardens of many years ago seemed to do great without them.... my raspberries here could use something to keep the ear wigs away though! Same with my other shrubs... it has been a battle of the ear wigs this summer! Plus caterpillar moths... am almost looking forward to being done with gardening this year as has been a battle. Your zinneas are just stunning.. love them.. are among my favorites... the colors are just so vivid. we've had some of those red sunsets as lots of smoke here too... from Sisters, OR and La Pine south of us. Has been horrible here for fires this year. I hate seeing all the beautiful land and forests being burned up. So sad. Will visit with you more when I get my internet back! Take care... Marilyn

    1. Hi Marilyn, sorry to hear that your internet is down . . . maybe you needed a break and didn't know it, LOL. I had an earwig problem in the spring and early summer, but it finally took care of it's self . . . hopefully they didn't leave a mess of eggs that will hatch next year. The way the fires are so bad this year makes you wonder how many camping sites will be closed in the next couple do years for regrowth. Well, my birthday was yesterday and my sweet sister-in-law baked me a chocolate cake with whipped cream between the four layers and chocolate frosting topped off with walnuts. It's in the frig and I haven't had breakfast . . . chocolate and coffee sound like a breakfast of champions to me, LOL. It calling my name . . . have a great day sweet friend :)
