Outhouse Project

 Let's talk Outhouses,
you know those little buildings
out behind the house where you
get relief while holding your nose, LOL

 But before that . . .

I've been saving more seed.

They will be a nice way to
save money next Spring.

Bringing in the last of the tomatoes
to enjoy.
You just do not get that amazing taste
from store bought tomatoes.

Our weather has been beautiful . . .
chilly mornings and evenings with warm
and pleasant afternoons.

This is our home, built in 1905.
(this photo is Spring a couple of years ago)
The point that I want to make is . . .

When our house was built
it most definitely did not have
indoor plumbing.
(this photo is also from another year
our leaves are not down yet this year)

It most certainly had one of these
in the backyard.

Steve and I spent Friday & Saturday
afternoon building this.

Here's the door sitting on the worktable.

It had to have a moon, right?

We put it out back by our compost bins
in the area we call our meadow.
The neighbors may be getting a bit nervous
seeing it so close to the fence . . .
but no worry, it's not a working privy,
but instead it will be used to store
our garden tools.

I just think it adds a cute touch
to our little country home :)

The best part is that it did not cost
us a penny . . . the boards were from
a fence we took out this Spring.
They have been leaning up against the
well-house and needing a purpose in life.
The pyramid  blocks were left here from the
former owner of the house.
The hinges were bought for some project
years ago that we never did.

Not one penny . . . that's a bargain!!!

    1. Thanks . . . I think it will bring a smile to everyone that walks back into the garden.
A little reminder of the past and a great spot for my garden tools.
Thanks so much for visiting, it means a lot :)

  2. Oh my gosh, I love your outhouse. What a nice addition to your yard. I sure would hate to actually have to use one of those things though, especially come winter...lol
You are so right about the taste of tomatoes from the garden. No store bought tomato can compare

    1. Hi Ann I'm tickled that you like my little outhouse . . . I'm always forgetting where I put my garden tools. Hopefully this will help me keep track of everything :)

  3. Such a cute little out-house! I remember those when I was a wee girl. I was always scared to do what I had to do in the middle of the night. =) Your ingenious thought of making it into a storage tool shed is a most excellent idea. I always love photos of your beautiful little home. Gorgeous photo of the tree with the tyre swing. I would love to swing high, high in the sky on that....though perhaps not....I might land plonk on my derriere!!

    1. Hi Kim, thanks so much for stopping by and visiting. It's always fun hearing feedback from my crazy ideas, LOL. I just thought an outhouse would be much cuter than a plain old shed.

    1. I think so, too . . . just as long as no one uses it, LOL. Really there is no seat inside, just a square place for storage :) Thanks for stopping by.

  5. What a great idea for your tools! A real outhouse, known as "long drop" over here, would not be half as cute.

    1. It's going to be nice to have all my garden tools in one place . . . I'm always hunting for them between the garage, shed, well house and greenhouse. It wastes a lot of time.

    1. I just thought an old outhouse would be cuter than a tidy shed and having all my gardening tool together will be nice, too :) I love that you think it's cute, I was afraid people would think I'd gone mad. Then again maybe I have, LOL.

  7. Yes, a bargain for sure and it is really cute! We had a real outhouse growing up. I would not like to go back to using it but it would always be nice to have a working one for emergencies. One time the indoor bathroom was not working when we went to visit so we had to go outside to use that one. Makes one appreciate all our modern conveniences! Nancy

    1. I remember using them too. They weren't the bathrooms that you would want to sit and linger, for sure. The smell was so bad that you got in and out as fast as possible, LOL. When I started getting the idea for building this and started gather my materials, I was surprised that we didn't have to run to Home Depot for anything. We even put it together with screws and Steve had a small bucket of some screws that he didn't like using because they were hard to get started into the wood . . . but we used them up on this outhouse, making it a no cost project. Everything from wood to screws, hinges and the handle were things we had hanging around from past projects . . . I love that :)

  8. Such a great idea... making your little tool shed look like an outhouse.
Your real house is so pretty and I love your porch. Every house needs a porch.
About tomatoes... we were getting a little tired of tomatoes on the menu twice a day, then we came to the end of them and already I'm wishing we still had more. No bought tomato seems to taste as good as home-grown.

    1. I know what you mean, my Steve is getting tired of them too, but I'm still loving them and eating them everyday. Soon that pan will be gone and it's a long time until next summer's crop.

  9. Hi Connie- you and Steve have done a great job of building the 'Replica Out-House'- it looks great! Your idea to use it to store the Garden Tools is a stoke of genius. Not costing a bean too is a bonus. Like the 'Moon' Motif- should bring you good luck in the garden. Well done! Cheers. KEV.

    1. Hi Kev, it's going to be nice having all my garden tools in one place instead of whichever building is the closest when I'm through with it. I waste a lot of time looking for the right tool between the garage, shed, well house and greenhouse. When you reach my age every minute counts, LOL.

  10. Very cute outhouse! We actually built one to use while we were building our house! I think there might be some law but we had to do something. Now it’s storage. I used to take those hot peppers and string them by running a needle and heavy duty thread through the top of them, then hang them up for decoration. They would dry perfectly.

    1. Hi Cindy, hey we both have outhouse storage sheds . . . how old fashioned of us, LOL. Yours would be cute out by your vintage trailer :) I think peppers hung like that are so pretty . . . I'm just wanting to get ours done . . . one more garden project to get done before quilting time out in the Art Barn. My list of chores is getting checked off and it won't be long now and the garden will clean and ready for next year.

  11. Good morning Connie. You are very industrious saving all of the seeds. You will definitely be ready when spring arrives again. I love the photos of your home. It looks like such a peaceful place and the outhouse is a perfect addition. I think that’s lots of fun! It is sure to be a conversation piece in your neighborhood. Blessings, Betsy

    1. I love projects that are cost free and one of my favorite places to shop is in my husband's scrap wood pile. The same with sewing. I love quilts made from the scrap box, they are close to free and the mix of fabric and colors is so cheerful and comforting.
A penny saved, is a penny earned :)

  17. Connie.... your outhouse idea was ingenious! Love it! I've used my share in my growing up years. And I had to laugh at the little piece of wood on the nail for keeping it closed! I remember that kind of closure when I was a child... going to a mountain cabin by Mt. Hood (Oregon) which had no electricity and had a little outhouse down the path aways.. that kind of wood on a nail was the closure! Brought back memories! My ex hubby and I had one in Wyoming we used for awhile with a cabin we built up on a hill, and it once blew over the winds were so high! We had a kind of shed for tools, but they still end up all over our yard, in the garage, beside the garage or leaned up somewhere along the fence. I try to keep them put away but it just doesn't happen! Your place is just darling, in so many ways. Hugs... Marilyn

This one is done and on to the next project . . . hopefully out in the Art Barn. I'm looking forward to having the garden and yard put to bed for the winter and time to sew :)

Love the crescent moon on the door...perfect!

Great job on saving seeds too! Not only is saving seeds a money saver, but you will know exactly what to expect from your plants next season. Have you heard of Baker Creek seed savers??

    Have a happy day.

    1. You're so sweet . . . it is going to be nice having a place to keep my garden tools altogether. Now I need to make it a habit to put everything away each time I use it. I waste a lot of time looking around for wherever I left something the last time I used it, LOL. I could use a few better organizing skills; I'm hoping my little outhouse will help me in this area of my life.

  23. Your outhouse is too cute, like how you added the moon, I was thinking you were putting the compost bin inside of it :) Like how you decorated the entrance of it also.... you two are just so crafty and not costing you a penny, well you can't get better than that!

  24. Connie, this is so cute!! I love the moon. I wanted my husbands grandparents outhouse for my garden tools. Thanks for sharing with SYC. I wanted to feature you this week, but I'm not seeing a link back. Do you have one?

  25. I like your "outhouse". That is fabulous that you did it using things you already had. We have an outhouse to but it is a working one. It doesn't get used much now but it was used regularly for a couple of months while we lived out here in a garage as our house was being built. It is still nice to have just in case. That is cool that you saved seeds. I like to do that but somehow this year I think I only did it with cucumbers. Oh well.
