Old Windows - New Greenhouse

Here is the pile of windows that we had left,
 after replacing the windows in our little home.
I used some for crafts, and gave some away,
but I still have quite a few left.
 Steve asked me to make him a Christmas quilt
 for the holidays . . .
Then he asked me what I would like :)
So, now we are building
my new potting-shed/greenhouse.
I am so excited!
We are recycling the old windows in our build.
It may look pretty rough around the edges
at the moment, but I'll have more photos,
as time goes by and construction continues :)
It is attached to the west side of the garden shed,
so it should get plenty of sun :)

 Well, as this progresses,
I'll be sure and add more photos
to my posts.
~~~*****~~~
It is nice being able to put more
of the old windows to use.
~~~*****~~~
Every year I get Spring Fever . . .
Now I'll be able to get out there
and start playing in the dirt in early Spring:)
 ~~~*****~~~
What are you up to this week?
Have A Lovely Day
&
Remember To Keep Smiling!
Your blogging sister,
Connie :)
    1. Hi Ann, I was a little bit nervous about using the old windows this way, because of lead paint, but I scraped them very well and then painted with primer and paint to give them a good seal. I'm excited about having a place to start my seeds and looking forward to making it cute and a fun place to spend time :)
  5. That is CLEVER! You are doing your bit for the planet , too, by re~ using : )
    I have always wanted a greenhouse, oh what fun you will have...perhaps you could get a few seeds started in the house which benefit from an early start, like sweet peas. Then they can go out there as soon as it is ready? Maybe your winters are just too cold, though.
    Its a good present, anyhow!
    Happy days to come : )
    know someone who can do that. My hubs is very handy, too, but don't know if he'd want to do a
    greenhouse. I'll ask him! Yours is going to be great! Susan
    1. Good Morning Susan, I'm looking forward to getting in there and making it cute and a fun place to spend my early spring days. Bedding plants are getting expensive and you never find the variety that you want . . .this is going to give me many garden options :)
  7. Now that is impressive recycling! I used an old window for a notice board by taking the glass out and putting wire in, it looks pretty good in my craft room.
    1. I know! I was afraid that by keeping them around, that they would just end up getting broken and then I would have glass to clean up. I hate cleaning up broken glass, but like you said, now I am very happy that I kept them (at least this long). I'm excited about having a place to start my garden seeds. It is not always easy to find the bedding plants that you want, but finding the seeds is much easier. Beside that, it will be so much fun getting a jump on Spring and the perfect cure for Spring fever, LOL.
  10. Oh, how much fun!
    If I was into blogging before we bought this house, we might never have moved to the beach. Of course, blogs didn't exist back then or at least, we didn't have internet at the time. But, I say this because we had an incredible shed in our garden at our old house that I tried to do something with (electricity and running water), but we eventually had torn down. Imagine what I could have done with that had Pinterest existed!!!
    1. Hi Carol, I know exactly what you are talking about. Pinterest has a colossal amount of creative ideas. I have to limit my time there, because I get started and one idea leads to another until time just escapes me.
    1. Hi Cindy, it is something that Steve and I are working on together and we are both getting so much enjoyment from building it. Around here if you want to buy bedding plants, all that you can find are the general plants. You can never find much of a variety: so it will be fun ordering seeds and planting some of the variations that we want to try. When early spring comes and it's too early to plant or get out and get my hands dirty, I can do it in my potting shed :)
      I'm very excited and looking forward to it :)
    1. Oh, I believe that we all have stuff that we have gotten tired of that when given a little elbow grease and a coat of paint can have a new and refreshing life. I would rather fix up something old and worn than purchase something new. My parents were folks that went through the great depression in their early marriage . . . they knew how to maintain what they had and to mend and make do . . . and I think that they passed that on to their children :)
  15. You are a lucky lady to have your husband make that for you! I'd love to have a greenhouse. I can't wait to see how it turns out. We need to replace almost all the windows in our house too.. who did your new windows? Are they wood framed? ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
    1. Hi Teresa, We had to special order our windows because this old house did not have stock sized windows. Not knowing this we waited too long and ordered them in mid September last year. We were told that it would be 4 to 6 weeks before we had them . . . we were really pushing the cold weather, LOL. When they arrived in October, we picked them up and started installing them. I would call Steve at work each day and ask him how many he wanted to install that night after work, then I would get busy and tear out the out windows. When he got home we would install them. It took us eight days doing it this way, but between the two of us we got them all installed, calked and trimmed. Two days later our first cold spell of the season was on us and we were inside cozy and warm. Oh, we did the vinyl windows that open from the top and the bottom. There are two kinds of windows and I can not remember what you call them but one has a edge on it and it is meant to be installed from the outside of the house and the other does not have a edge and you install it from the inside. We did the ones with the edge (outside) on our old house, but we did the no edge inside installation on this house and it was so much easier and way less ladder climbing. Good luck to you . . . you are going to be so happy with your new windows, we sure are. Who knows maybe I'll be reading your post next year while you are building a greenhouse from your old windows :)
    1. Hi Judy, I have always loved working in the yard, but now that we have the room to garden, a whole new world has opened up to me. I absolutely love raising a garden and watching every thing grow . . . not to mention the joys of eating off our land. Grocery shopping is so much fun, when the grocery store is the backyard :)
It is wonderful to share this with my blogging sisters because this has been a dream of mine, long before I even had a space where I could think about it ever happening. The old windows are working out beautifully . . . If you lived closer I would share them with you, so that you could also build your greenhouse dream. I will still have plenty left over after this project, want to take a road trip?
    1. Oh, I am looking very forward to this new adventure. We don't even have the roof on yet, and it gets too hot in there to work in the afternoon. Tomorrow it is suppose to get up to 93 degrees. It is amazing the amount of heat that comes from the sun through those windows. We are planning on adding the roof tomorrow, but will have to do it in the early morning :)
    1. HI Brandi, Nothing is sweeter than a handmade gift . . . but the two years before this we have been doing date-night gifts. We each plan a date-night surprise for one another and that is wonderful, too. It's hard to plan them in our small town compared to living in a larger city, but we managed. Dinner and the Community Playhouse for their Christmas play, Dinner and a drive to see all the Christmas lights on homes. If we were younger ice skating and a bonfire would be a fun date-night, or winter night skiing, but we've left that kind of fun behind at our age, LOL. As for my potting shed/greenhouse . . . I am truly excited, it's going to be absolutely wonder to go out there next spring and start my seeds. A great cure of Spring Fever :)
      Thanks so much for stopping by . . . I appreciate you friendship.
  27. Oooh Connie, recycled windows!! You and your hubby are so clever! Most people would have dumped them but I can see that in the months to come, not only will you have a lovely new greenhouse, but lots more fruit and veg produce too! Brilliant idea. Thanks for your visit and your lovely comment - it's nice to have your own space that you can shut the door on, isn't it. Mine is a converted bedroom as I'm afraid I don't run to a barn (now come on Shoshi, don't get envious!!). I'm feeling a lot better today but haven't been creating because I've had a lovely friend visiting and we were able to catch up and we had such a great day.
