French Laundry Rag Pail

My Old Bucket's New Home

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This old galvanized bucket has been around our house for so long that I do not even remember buying it.  It has been very handy when washing the car.  It has been a great bucket to have beside me when I'm pulling weeds.  This old bucket has lent a helping hand to many projects throughout it's life.
Now I'm moving it into the house.
~~~~~~~
The other day I was washing windows outside and I asked Steve to run in the house and get me a couple more rags.  I told him they were folded on the dryer.
Well, being a man . . . he came back with new dish towels.
They were folded on the dryer, too.
So, today I had the great idea to make a special place for cleaning rags
(old stained, raggy and worn out wash cloths, dish towels and tee shirts).
 When looking around for a container,
this old bucket caught my eye.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I made a stencil with my circut cutter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dry brushed the bucket with a little white paint.
Applied the stencil using burnt umber paint
and trimmed it out with freehand lines
that I put on with a brown sharpie pen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's not fancy . . . but my sweet hubby
won't get new dish towels and old rags mixed up anymore. :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    1. Hi Linda, I am happy that you liked my old beat up bucket re-do. The best part is, Sunday when Steve wanted a rag for a job out in the backyard, he knew right where to go. That makes me happy, because now I won't see my nice dish towels ruined with stains and paint. Have a great week, Connie :)
  5. The bucket idea was Great! I especially love the size and design of your stencil!! Did you say you had a machine that did that? Can I buy one? I want to stencil different size/shapes words on pillows this winter..or would it be cheaper just to buy stencils already designed? mmmmmmmm.....any tips would be great!     1. Hi Roxie, I make my stencils on my Provo Craft Cricut. They can be very expensive, but mine is the first model and you can find them pretty cheap, just ask around. You may even have a friend that up dated to a newer model and has an old model stashed in the back of their closet, or even ask on Craig's list. As long as you have one good alphabet cartridge you can make stencils that say anything you want and with letters from 1 inch to 5 1/2 inches tall. That's what mine does, but like I said it is the oldest model, the newer one do even more. They even have a model made just for cutting fondant frosting. You name it, they make it, these days. Good luck finding a cheap deal. If it's used , try it out before buying. Have a great week, Connie :)
    1. Hi Cindy, It took me thirty six years of marriage to finally have a special "Out-in-the-open" spot for rags. As long has he had to take a lid off, or hunt for a box in the closet . . . he would just pick up a dish towel. It's a man's thing. Last Sunday he needed a rag and to my delight he went right to the rag bucket. I am hoping that a "good boy" and a little scratch behind the ears and he'll remember how sweet it is to not mess with my dish towels. I know that I have little pet peeves that bother him, too. Like putting away the remote when I dust the family room, LOL. It doesn't belong it the cute little remote carrier I bought him, it belongs right by his side of the couch. Isn't life wonderful . . . we have so many little things come up each day where we can choose to get upset, or laugh it off. I love a good laugh! Here's wishing you the best day ever, Connie :)
  10. I have a cheap, not-so-old stock pot that warps when it gets hot on the stove that I've decided not to use again but wasn't quite sure what to do with it. I thought about drilling some holes in it and using it as a planter but I just might paint it up and use it to store our rags. Thanks for the idea!
    I'd also love to hear any other ideas you may have for my stock pot!
  29. What a wonderful new job for an old galvanized bucket!! It's new look is very becoming. Thanks so much for your comment on my paperdoll post. I agree, one of the reasons they are so much fun is you can daydream and draw you own clothes for them. I did that a lot when I was a girl. And I do similar things today with Polyvore. Have you tried that yet? (look on my sideboard.) It allows you "grab" pictures of clothes to create any fashion look you like. Perfect for people like me who have always enjoyed dressing dollies, or children, or cats, or anything else that would hold still for two seconds.
      Thank you for this sweet comment. I so enjoy your blog and your photography is amazing. My husband and I ran a photography studio for eight years until I decided to go back to school. I know that most people think that you need a super camera to take great photos. Untrue. If you don't have an eye for light and composition you'll never take good photos no matter what camera you are using. You have a eye for the camera and your shots are spot-on outstanding. I am looking forward to a wonderful blogging friendship. Have a fantastic day, Connie :)
    1. Hi Daniela. Back in the years 1965 through 1973 I lived in an area where we used a bucket to carry our water, too. Sometimes from a well and sometimes from a spring. It is very hard work especially on laundry day, but you do what you have to do. Because, of living that way, I think it makes me not take running water for-granted. Many times when I'm in the shower, I'm thanking God for being able to just turn a faucet and enjoy. Have a wonderful weekend, and thank you so much for following my blog I truly appreciate it.
