Pennies On The Dollar Bedroom.

Welcome to my French inspired shabby chic bedroom.
**********

It all started last Saturday morning when Butchy and
I went for a walk to the mailbox,
and spied this at a neighbors yard sale.
***********

When I got back home I told Steve that I needed
his help to pick up a piece of furniture that I just bought.
When he saw it . . . his eyes rolled back
(I could read his mind . . .what does she want with this thing
and where is she going to put it) with that not again look.
***********

He just can't see the finished project in his head.
Looks a little different now, don't you think?
***********

Well, I just couldn't paint the dresser.  I had to paint the walls, too.
Then I made a curtain valance and a curtain for the closet door, both from a queen sized sheet that I purchased with a dust ruffle for $3.99 at the Goodwill store.
***********

While buying my paint at Home Depot I also purchased eleven pre-cut picket fence boards and made this easy built headboard.
When I get an idea ~ there is no stopping me.
***********

The little garland is something I had back in the closet . . . I purchased it at a yard sale a couple years ago and put it up in the entry way for Valentine's . . . now it has a permanent home over the bed.
***********

The decorations are other finds that I have purchased through the years.  The lamp was a yard sale find, that I covered with fabric and made a little paper heart to hang on the side.  The lamp shade (with the help of my handy dandy hot glue gun) is decorated in silk flower petals.  The daisy basket was a Goodwill 99 cent find back at Easter.  The flower prints were a garage sale find at $1.00 each, this spring.  My motto is if you love it and the price is dirt cheap, buy it.  You'll find the right place for it and if not, sell it at your next garage sale.
***********

These little angels are from the Dollar Store.
Aren't they adorable!
***********

I painted this ceiling several years ago and I love it,
but I did do a cheap-o Connie style crown modeling effect.
(notice I haven't given the paper doll mobile to my granddaughter yet . . . they are too busy moving and haven't gotten around to deciding how they want their new bedroom)  When they see it, if they like it, then it's theirs . . .
if not I think it looks pretty here.
***********

This is not the best photo, but you can get the idea of what I did here.  I purchased two small trim boards a quarter circle for the top next to the ceiling.  Then a few inches down I put a small very plain piece.  I left wall space in between and painted it white.  I wanted something different for the corners of the room.  The corner trims at Home Depot started at $10 each (not in my pennies on the dollar budget).  When I was headed to the check stand I saw this end rack of 2 X 2s  for 98 cents each.  I purchased one, cut myself four (one for each corner) 8 inch pieces, then I glued a wooden ball on the end.  I have bags of wooden balls in my craft room, that I bought at another yard sale last year.
You just never know what you might use them for.
***********

Just another view of the room.
Steve built me these bookshelves a few years ago for my birthday.
***********

Hat racks are nothing more than re-purposed candle holders and chair legs.
***********

I love my cowgirl boots!
I've got them all broken in and comfy.
***********

Notice the little desk.  It is an old sewing machine table that my neighbors had out in front of their house with a $15 sign on it a few years ago.
The top was veneered and peeling off,
so I just peeled it off and sanded down the wood that was under it.
Stamped the same design that I have on the front in each corner
and varnished over it.
A little white paint, and little black paint around the edge and little gold to highlight ~ you have it . . . it makes a great little desk or table.
***********

All three of these items were garage sale finds.
***********

I hope you like my little spare bedroom . . .
I painted this door back when I did the ceiling.
I was on a trumpe loeil kick for a while.  This room also had some bees buzzing around some topiaries. I should have taken before photos.  It was just time for a change and this old dresser was my inspiration.  If you were to lay down on the floor and look under the bookshelves you would find one more thing that I left from the last time I did this room . . .under there you will find
Mademoiselle Fifi's little mouse hole,
with flower pots and topiaries.
She is a very fancy mouse.
***********

I hope you have fun here . . . I had fun putting this post together.
It has been a week of hard work, but now I'm enjoying this new room.
***********

Come again, and be sure and leave a comment,
I love hearing what you think.

Bonne Soir'ee,  Connie :)

    1. Thank you Laurie, you are such a sweetheart. I am very pleased that you like my new bedroom re-do. I enjoy seeing how far I can make a penny go . . . I truly believe that you do not have to be rolling in the dollars, to have a stylish and lovely home. Have a restful weekend, and know that you and your husband are in my prayers. He is blessed to have you as his mate, our a darling. Connie :)

  2. You have been working VERY hard Connie. I think you deserve a good rest now! You have some lovely ideas here. I especially like the hat stand idea - using candle holders and old chair legs and the bedroom drawer unit looks great transformed by your magic touch! Enjoy the rest of your weekend and your new room.

    1. Hello Jacqui, I'm very happy that you like my ideas. Yes, I am tired and need a rest. The older I get the more time it takes to re-coop after a project like this. Are you a hat collector? I have so many in hat boxes, but I love to have some on display, too. If you nail or glue a square block of wood to the base of a section of chair rail and a smaller square or circle at the top . . . you have a hat stand. Also if you find a dowel the size of a candle and glue it into a candle holder, then glue a square or circle of wood on top of that, you have another hat stand. It's simple and can be gorgeous when you keep your eyes open for lovely thrift store candle holders and broken cheap or free chairs. Have fun with it! Have a great week, Connie :)

  9. Connie: You have created quite a sweet room. Any guest would be honored to stay there. I especially love, love, love your painted ceiling. It looks so realistic and just like what I had in mind when I painted one in my grandson's baby room years ago (which is soon to be my sewing and craft room whenever we get those soon-to-be OTHER projects out of the way.) Anyway, mine does not look anywhere as pretty as yours. Yours looks very professional..Happy Weekend..Judy

It is hard to say what I liked best, but I do love the bird-nest lampshades and that little pair of shoes are a perfect touch. You made me remember that somewhere in my hall closet I have my first cowgirl boots, I was around two or three years old when I wore them. I'm going to dig them out and put them on the shelf in my bedroom . . . thanks for inspiring me. Also, thank you for this lovely comment. I'm delighted that you like my ceiling. Have a great week, Connie :)

You know, by the time I was finished with the room, I was behind on the laundry, and cleaning. My the time I got all that caught up I was dead to the world. I have this strong willpower that keeps me going until I get everything completed, but my body is getting older that my will power. It's hard to make the changes that are necessary as we age. Slowing down has never been in my vocabulary . . . but my Steve is trying to put it there, LOL. Have a wonderful week, Connie :)

    1. Hi Kerin, I only buy if I love, love, love it, or if I like it a lot and the price is cheap. It really surprises me sometimes how cheap somethings are at yard sales, and then the next one you hit the prices are almost as high as brand new items in the stores. I shop yard sales for great buys and quaint stuff. Sometimes I'll go almost all summer without finding anything, then I'll hit a sale that makes me dig deep in my purse, because everything is a treasure and it's priced right. Sometimes I can get Steve to do with me on a Saturday, but Friday's I'm on my own. Most of my friends, just don't get it . . . they like to travel out of town to the cities and shop the malls. Then they come to my house and ask, "Where did you find that?" I almost always answer, a yard sale or thrift shop. Thank you for your sweet comment on my bedroom, I'm happy that you like it. Connie :)

    1. Thank you for the sweet comment. Those cowgirl boots get wore a lot . . . It is fun to dress western when I perform. We have been having a huge heat wave (along with most of America) and next week we have a three hour performance at our local county fair. I'll be drinking a lot of water during our breaks, LOL. I'm happy that you like the room re-do. I love walking in there now and just looking around. It's nice to have a change.
Have a great week, Connie :)

    1. Thanks for popping in to visit. The door that you mentioned is the inside of the bedroom door, you only see it when you are in the room with the door closed. I'm delighted that you liked my re-do. Have a great day . . . and do visit again. Connie :)

  58. Hi Connie,

Your spare bedroom is so cute!! You are one clever gal. I'm reining myself in from the thrift store and garage sales as I really don't have the space -- but then I remember that I rent out a storage unit and it has space...... tee hee I love your painted ceiling and the door - especially around the door knob that has the lock. I've been wanting to paint my house but I'm afraid I'll have to hire someone to do it for me as I don't have the energy.

I love those cowboy boots too!

Thank you so much for you sweet comments on my blog. I have really enjoyed it and meeting people like you really is what it's all about. Thank you for your lovely support! I will probably post my blog candy on Wednesday. Be sure to pop on over and see what's up for grabs. One item will be one of my canvases.

    Hugs,
    Kay

    1. Hi Kay, thank you for your gracious comments. You are very right about blogging being about meeting people. I have met so many lovely people. People who are not only creative but also warm and caring.
I'm glad that you like my cowboy boots . . . you live in New Mexico, I'm sure you have a pair, too. How do you hike around the desert taking photos, without them?
Wednesday is going to be a very busy day for me. I will be out at our county fair most of the day, but I am excited to see what you have planned for your post. Have a very nice day, Your blogging sister, Connie :)
