New Windows Before Winter

See that beautiful new window.
We picked up our order at Home Depot on Saturday morning.

Twelve windows in all.
It was a special order, because of the sizes.
That means if we measured wrong, they can not be returned.
So far so good:)
We have four installed and eight to go.

Before photo
when we first bought this house in the early spring.

Now Photo,
Well, with eight more windows to install,
you know what the two of us will be up to.

What project do you have on your plate?

We love our new place
&
are having so much fun turning it from,
"House to Home"

Have a wonderful week.

Your blogging sister,
Connie:)

  2. What a difference in the look of your house already! It looks so fresh and updated. We replaced 3 windows in our house a couple of years ago, but still have 5 more to go. They are so expensive!

    1. Oh, I know that they are, but this house had been in need of them for a long time. In one of the bedrooms there was only half a window, plus a storm window that was barely nailed in. They had plastic on every window to keep out the cold. It is an expense but in our case we ready didn't have the option to wait. In our other home (the one we have for sale) we replaced the windows slowing between around four years, one, two or three a year:) You might look into a program from your utility service. Our does a house check and if they agree that the windows need replacing, they will pay you back so much a square foot. Because we are doing the labor ourselves it will amount to between 1/3 and 1/4 of our cost. It's a big help, you may want to call and see if there is a program in your area. It is not for low income people, rather for homes with large energy loss. It is certainly worth asking about:)

  4. I think your windows look great! Good job...
Also a good tip about the utilities company. The do have help with that sort of thing. I hope you were able to get help with yours. We've had plastic on our windows in the past.
I'm enjoying seeing all the progress on your new home.

    1. Yes we were able to get help. It will pay about a forth of our cost. Mainly, because we do not have labor cost. We are strictly DIYers.

  6. Hi Connie
Thanks for dropping by my blog and leaving a nice comment. You have improved the house already and the new windows will make a difference in your heating bill over winter for sure. When we bought the small bungalow we're in now, we changed the windows right away to be more efficient. I think the biggest thing we did that made an improvement in heating/cooling costs was to have extra insulation blown into the attic. It was an older husband and wife team that we hired - he in the attic and she in the truck feeding the machine. We can barely hear the rain on the roof now.
    Have a good week!

    1. Hi Judith, thanks for stopping by to say "Hi" . . . we have been having a lot of work done under the house as far as insulation and duct work. These windows are going to be wonderful. We are looking forward to a cozy warm winter. As, for the attic . . . time will tell, but that is very good to know. Thanks.

    1. Thank you Nancy, we are giving it our all, but the last copy of days I have been under the weather . . . I'm not sure if I caught a bug or if it's allergies. Steve came home tonight not feeling well either so I think that there is a bug going around. At least you can visit on-line without worrying about passing it on to a friend :) Here's wishing you a lovely week.

    1. Hi Ann, we really didn't have a choice to wait . . . the windows in this old house are in terrible shape. The folks before us had plastic on every window and there were even panes missing in a couple of the bedrooms. If they hadn't had storm windows nail over them the rain would have come in. We knew that we were buying a fixer-upper . . . but I think that when the windows are finished, we will be able to relax and get down to the normal one or two projects a year:) That will be like being on vacation after the last few months that we've had, LOL.

  11. We finally are getting our roof fixed today so it will not leak into the kitchen.....I feel like a ton of bricks have been knocked off my shoulders. Now we have to get the ceiling fixed and restored....but that won't be for awhile...need to save towards it. Your house is looking beautiful, you did a lot of work!!!

    1. Good Morning Louise, I am so happy for you . . . leaking roofs are a major fix and a very serious concern. Now, you will be able to rest when the rain and snow comes this winter :) We, too are hurrying to beat the cold weather . . . it is just around the corner and having these new windows all installed will be great. We put another in last night when Steve got home from work. Five down and seven to go.

    1. Good Morning Noela, painting is one of my fun jobs, not that it isn't hard work, but because you can make such an incredible chance for less money that most home repairs. Fresh paint is a true up lifter :) I hope that you are posting before and afters:)

  13. That's a big job, Connie! We did that for a lot of years. My husband and I owned and operated a Window, Siding & Door business. We loved the business but sold it several years ago to do something different. You will love having new windows...and it will make your house so much more energy efficient. Good luck getting them all in!

Did they tell you at the store to stuff insulation in around the opening once you have the window in place before you finish putting the molding and stuff on. It really stops a lot of air penetration. xo Diana

    1. Good Morning Diana, We are caulking all around the outside and then putting that spray in foam insulation between the window and the wall . . . That stuff isn't my favorite to work with but it sure seals things nice and tight. We are going to be snug and a bug this winter :)

  19. I love the new window and that you chose paned window (is that the correct word?), they look very cottage-y. I changed my downstairs windows two winters ago and I'm so happy I did it. It's a lot more cosy inside now without cold drafts licking your feet in the morning!

    1. Good Morning Roxie, I know what you mean . . . with every beautiful leave that turns golden yellow, there is also the warning that cold weather is right around the corner. I think that once the windows are in, that we will be able to rest knowing that we did all that we can and any other jobs can wait. I'm looking forward to sitting by the fireplace looking out at the fallen snow. I'll be nursing a cup of tea, a plate of ginger snaps, with a book in my hand and Butchy at my feet . . . that's a perfect winter day:) Oh, and did I mention, no drafts from leaking windows, LOL. Thanks for dropping by to visit, I know that you are very busy.

    1. Good Morning Val,
I'll be coming over to see if you have photos posted of your path. I am very interested. I would like to eventually make some kind of a path from your gate to the front steps. Right now it is grassy lawn. With all the jobs around here, that one is down the list, but something to think about and plan :)
Have a lovely day and thanks so much for stopping by.

    1. Good Morning Shoshi, I am sitting at my computer nursing my morning coffee and planing out my day. At the moment I'm having trouble just mustering up some energy :) Maybe after the coffee kicks in, LOL. Are you a coffee drinker or is it only tea? I love the afternoon habit of tea time. We should develop that habit too. It seems that around 3 o'clock in the afternoon I need a little lift and sometimes I use the excuse to eat too much and then spoil my dinner or supper . . . I'm not sure what you call the evening meal.
Well, I was intrigued my your card. You showed us so many techniques and they were all new to me. I used to make cards all the time and truly enjoyed it. I still have many stamps and tools and will keep them for a while, because my interests change and I might just start making cards again. With you around as inspiration . . . I'm sure that I will :) Your last post was great, and you are a wonderful teacher.
      Have a lovely day.

    1. Hi Patty, thanks for stopping by to visit. I know that these windows will make a wonderful difference in our heat bill and how warm the house stays this winter. In our last home we replaced the windows, but we only did a couple each year. This old house was in such bad shape that we didn't have the choice to wait. It was replace them or freeze to death this winter, LOL. When I saw the guitar I just thought that it was yours. Have you ever wanted to learn? Sounds like you have an in house teacher:)

  25. What projects have we been up to? Seriously? Let's see....staining and sealing garden statuary before winter ruins it, moving stuff from the garage to the pole barn, trying to clean up the pole barn, finishing the camper, getting beehives ready for winter....it feels never ending. I'm almost looking forward to winter. I said ALMOST! Your home looks beautiful and very homey!
