Sunday Drive

I remember when I was a kid and someone would be driving
along slowly admiring the scenery . . .
my Dad always called them a Sunday driver.

I guess that's what we were last Sunday,

As we took a little drive into the desert . . .

To one of our favorite oasis.

This is a wildlife reserve about 5 miles out of town.

We have a migration of White Pelicans, that come in every year,
this must have been too early in the year to see them.

The only thing we saw were ducks,
but I have seen the Pelicans and Deer out here
on previous trips.

I like the old dead trees in the water
and their reflection.

They have a haunting moody appeal.

It was an enjoyable little road trip . . .
not far, but a break from sitting around the house
on a Sunday afternoon :)

What did you do last weekend?

Wishing you all a wonderful day.
Keep Smiling!

Your blogging sister,
Connie :)

  1. The sun was shining so beautifully on Sunday after church that on our way home I urged my husband to keep driving so he did. We spotted some swans in a field that were so beautiful but I was without the camera. On our way back they were still there so when we got home I grabbed the camera and returned by myself. Some of them were still there. I haven't uploaded the photos yet but the picture is still in my mind. Love a Sunday drive...

    1. Hi Mindy, I'll be over to see your photos when you get them posted. It was nice to just get outside and away from the house for a while :)

    1. Hi Ann, it was a lovely day and the first one that we haven't have something going on. When Steve said, "do you want to go for a drive", I couldn't get my coat on fast enough. Even Butchy ran to the back door and stood there waiting, LOL. Sorry you had to work.

  3. When I was a kid, living on the farm, every single Sunday afternoon we would take a drive along country roads. I always like to lay up in the back window---lol---long before seat belt rules....don't know how I survived.
You pictures really show how cold and desolate it is this time of year. I love those old trees- they are haunting. xo Diana

    1. Hi Diana, I know, even when my daughter was a toddler, I had one of those car seats that hung over the back of the passenger's seat. Do you remember them? They were a death trap, but we didn't know . . . I just wanted her to be able to see out the window and enjoy the drive:) When I was a kid we had a 1955 Chevy station wagon. My favorite place to ride was in the back with pillows, blankets and comic books. Like you said all this was before the seat belt laws:)

  4. Yes ... my Dad used to call slow-poke drivers "Sunday Driver" too :)

I absolutely LOVE going for drives!! It's so nice to get out of the house, and see some new scenery!
Looks like you have a pretty little lake there to go and see, and enjoy.

    1. Hi Kerin, I think that in the days when all the stores were closed on Sunday and families had Sundays together. Families did more Sunday drives, just for the sake of enjoying time together, more picnics, more outdoor movies, drives through the country. Now, every member of the family over 17 has a car and everyone goes their own way and does their own thing, as well as having to working on Sundays. I'm sure there were a lot more people then, just slowly driving along enjoying their "Sunday Drive, with their Sunday Driver at the wheel"' LOL. I want those days back :)

  5. Hi Connie, That looks like a peaceful place. My Dad use to drive down the road slowly looking at things. I have heard the term Sunday driver before!! I don't think people do that anymore like that use too. Gas too high and we are all in a hurry. Glad you could enjoy the drive. I went to a knitting group! Nancy

    1. Hi Nancy, well going to a knitting group sounds very enjoyable, too :) I think that you are right. Sunday drives are not done as often as when we were kids, but back then all the stores were closed, hardly anyone worked on Sundays except farmers and I'm sure they limited there work to necessity on Sundays. Therefore; piling the kids in the car and even packing a picnic was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon :)

  7. Hi Connie! Your photos are lovely! Didn't do much over the weekend. Cleaning on Sunday and Saturday hung out with my sister and our good friend. We enjoyed some wine, food and talk. We were supposed to be crafting, but not much got done!

    1. Hi Kelly, whether you crafted or not it sounds like you had an enjoyable time. Thanks for stopping by, and I'm happy that you liked my photos. The water was so still that the reflections were pretty cool :) Have a great week and sneak in a little fun time :)

  8. We call that "farming" when you drive slowly looking out of the windows admiring the views. Lovely photos.

    1. Hello Gill, I like that, "farming", it is fun to learn the different phrases that you Brits use for things that we use and do in our everyday life. I am surprised that we have such different slang words. My heritage is British, so I would think that I would know more of your terms. Then again my ancestors came over here before automobiles were invented :) Of all the places in the world, I would love to visit your country one day, if my budget every allow it :)

    1. Hi Vicky, the same back at you . . . I hope that your week is going along in a happy direction. I spent Monday cooking, baking and cleaning, Tuesday working outside in the backyard filling one of my garden boxes and today I plan on getting some sewing done. I'm trying to figure out and fit fabric for a slipcover for my recliner. Keep smiling and be happy :)

  11. Of course, you know I like my Sunday drives...so nice to see yours. Wonderful area that you went to and love the ducks. So different than what we have here. Pretty.

    1. Hi Tete, our area is very different from yours. We have very little humidity; our summers are hot and dry. One of the things that I miss most living out here is lightening bugs. We do not have them and hot because we live in the desert, because they don't have them in the Seattle area either and it rains every other day there. They were such a fun part of my summers as a kid growing up in Indiana. Here's wishing you a wonderful week, and maybe time for a Sunday drive of your own next weekend:)

  12. Lovely. lovely pictures. Well worth the long slow drive! Sunday drivers had a lot less stress than the ones calling them that.

  13. Hi Connie, I love the pictures. I have several pictures of trees, dead and alive, and they add so much to pictures. It's always wonderful to head on out for a drive. You never know what you'll see. Take care.

    1. Hi Denise, I love it when we head out to places unknown to us. When Steve and I were newlyweds we had a Toyota Land-cruiser. That thing would go anywhere and we were notorious for heading off the beaten path and discovering new trails and new adventures. I miss that :)

  14. Hi Connie.. oh my your area is looking cold! We're having a crazy early Spring here in Oregon and all kinds of flowers are in bloom in the yard. I love your washi tape on your shelves.. I hope it stays on! I did crocheted edging for the shelves in my antique oak china cabinet.. I just love how that turned out. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

    1. Hi Teresa, your crocheted edging sounds lovely. Since we purchased our little bungalow, I just love adding vintage touches, especially in the kitchen. Polka dots remind me of my childhood. We are promised a temperature of 60 for Saturday, I sure hope the forecast is correct. I'm looking forward to some warm sunny days . . . today was beautiful, but I spent my day sewing a slipcover for my recliner in the living room . . . almost finished it :)
Here's wishing you a warm and sunny weekend:)

These are such pretty pictures, and it looks like you have a love for nature like I do. It's nice to get out of the house on Sundays and take a little drive.

  20. Hi Connie, You captured some wonderful photos from your Sunday afternoon drive. Love days to get out and enjoy a drive. We were on a little road trip last weekend too and I also saw dead trees in the water. Birds were perched on the branches.
