New Year ~ New Adventure Tutorial

Have you ever purchased new art books
and supplies.
Got home and couldn't wait to try them out . . .
only to be disappointed?
I have many times . . .

But that wasn't the case this time:)

I am inspired to push my quilting
in a new artful direction
and these products are going to help me.

I haven't been this excited
in a very long time!

Here's A little tutorial
of what I have been doing . . .

1.  Make a sketch

2When it's the way you want it take a sharpie
and go over the main lines.

3.  Sandwich two pieces of fabric
with batting

4. Slide your sketch between the batting
and top fabric

5. Trace your sketch onto the fabric

6.  Carry over to your sewing machine
and with a darning foot and your
feed pedals down, start to draw with dark thread.

This step is so much fun!

7.  Tape your fabric to a table
with freezer paper (shiny side up) under it.
Then paint like you would a watercolor.

Now, I have the tools to marry
Art Journaling
&
Quilting
&
it's so much fun!

Here are some of my other blocks.

After they dry for 72 hours they
are suppose to be machine washable.

At that time I am going to go in with
white thread and do some more quilting
before using them as quilt blocks.

Here is where I used the markers.
After the fabric is dry you can write on
it with the fabric markers.

I hope some of my excitement has rubbed off
on you . . . It's a new year
and time to dive into new adventures
in creativity:)

As I was leaving the Art Barn
I turned around and took this photo.
It was getting dark and the flash
focused on the snow coming down.

Here's where I was headed . . .
Our little home looks warm and cozy :)

I know that this was a long post . . .
but if you have time
please leave a comment.

Would you ever think about trying this?

 Keep Smiling!

Your blogging sister,
Connie:)

We are getting a blizzard . . . the wind is blowing so hard right now that the snow is coming down sideways.

  4. OH MY GOSH!!!!! Connie I LOVE these. I have to try it. Now a trip to the craft store is in order for paints and markers not to mention I need to get a darning foot. I'm full of questions here though...lol Do you need to use those paints in order for it to be machine washable? When you trace the design on the fabric do you use a regular pencil or something else? When you stitch do you have a preferred stitch setting for the length? I probably have more questions but I think I've already made a pest out of myself

  6. That post wasn't too long at all........you just took the time to take us through each step...I like that !

I'd like to try more thread-sketching, and I like this way of giving me something to base mine on....a sketch.

And I adore the photos, focusing on the snow. We don't have snow, and I love snow, but I don't drive on snow, so I'll live vicariously (almost said PRECARIOUSLY) through yours !

    1. I am delighted that I could inspire you to try this. I'm going to pull out my old art journals and turn some of those sketches into pillows for my Art Barn. This is such a sweet comment, thank you . . . you've given me a nice positive boost to start my day. I'll have to do some shoveling to get out to the barn this morning. It snowed like crazy last night and the wind is still blowing from the north.

  9. I think this is fantastic. I'm not artistic and the sewing machine I bought a year ago (heavy duty one) is still in the box unopened. But hope springs eternal they say and I am pinning this post for future guidance if and when I open that box! I do think you did an excellent job of making it look fairly easy to do and I am sure I could come up with a half way decent project piece should I get busy with it.

    1. That's cool, and thanks for the comment on the snowy photos. One blogging sister said that they reminded her of a snow globe and I think that really fits :) The wind is still blowing and it cuts to the bone when you go outside. I've got all of my Christmas decoration down and packed up, but we don't want to fight this wind to put them in the shed and well house. Hopefully we'll get some milder weather soon.

  15. This looks like so much fun! I used to dabble in painting fabric YEARS ago! I would draw or transfer the image onto muslin, then use a Sharpie (even then! in the 60's) and then paint inside the lines with fabric paint. They even had it in the 60's. then I would put it on batting and hand stitch around the image. I made a few pillows doing that, but kind of lost interest I guess. I did enjoy it and this opens up whole new possibilities! I love what you have done so far!

You get a lot done in a short time. I can't wait to see the quilt. I love the snow pictures. Your home does look cozy and warm. Love, Henny

    1. Those snow pictures really surprised me, I had no idea how the flash would capture the snowflakes . . . I'm glad I tried taking them, it was getting dark and I didn't even no if I would get anything. As for the free motion embroidery, have you ever tried it on your machine. I think you would be surprised at how much fun it is.

    1. It's going to be a great new year . . . adventures in quilting, sign making , gardening and kayaking . . . and who knows what else. Once you reach my age, you realize that if you want to try something new, you better do it now, don't let any moss start growing under your feet. We all should get out of bed with the attitude that today we will enjoy every wonderful moment. Whistle while you work, hug and say, I love you, and slow down enough to enjoy God beautiful planet earth :) Here's wishing you a bright and happy new year, my friend . . . Enjoy!

  20. Happy New Year Connie! I can envision some really beautiful and original quilts coming out of your art barn this year. The snow scenes were just lovely and everything looked so peaceful and really seemed to capture the essence of the moment. I felt like I was walking beside you and could feel the cold nipping my cheeks and hear the stillness of a snowy night. Blessings to my blogging friend.

  22. The only reason I wouldn't attempt it is because I know better! I'm not the artist that you are. I wish I was, but I know my limits. I still make the same bird, and fish, that my Dad showed me how to make when I was about eight years old. Kind of looks like a figure eight with a beak and stick legs! Girl, you have talent!
Sorry to see someone plowed into your fence. That is the reason I don't like winter. People wreck, all the time. They don't slow down. And because it's cold, and I don't like to be cold. It is pretty though. And those last two pictures you took of your adorable art barn and warm and cozy house are perfect! If I didn't know any better, I'd like winter because it LOOKS pretty! I know better though! Take care!

  23. Beautiful work Connie! I just love the blocks you made. I have wanted to do more in the 'art' quilt genre. I look forward to seeing more of your wonderful projects in the coming year. Which of the books you purchased had the directions for this process?

  24. What a fabulous post, Connie. Your enthusiasm is infectious! Love what you've done with the designs and new techniques. There is no stopping your creativity! As for the snow pictures, they are incredible - I couldn't believe you'd taken thenm to start with. No snow here - far too mild, although we've had some frosts.

Thank you for your visit and you lovely comment - the 2 copies of the mini-album are now finished and I gave the copy to our friends today on our outing (photos on my blog). I am hoping soon to make a video slideshow of the completed album and also do a blog post with all the photos of the finished pages. We are still very busy with various social activities and I've got quite a bit of catching up to do.

    Happy New Year!
