Growth, Progress, Hard Work & Enjoyment

Remember my gate makeover . . .

The grape vines are growing up
the trellis . . .

And in another month they should be
all the way across :)

I watched a few You Tube videos
on pruning raspberry bushes . . .

So after my last berry picking I started pruning.

What a mess!

This is what I took out . . .
this is from 3 original, 3 year old plants.

This is the berry bushes now.

I picked apricots,
some for eating & some for drying.
I still have some jam
and some frozen ones from last year.

My latest project is this area.
We put in drip-lines to the boxes,
but I was still watering the plants
on the side of the potting shed.
Then I found this long skinny PVC pipe
in Steve's shop.

That's all it took to start an idea
forming in my wild & crazy brain, LOL
I painted it brown, put a drip line through it,
and started gathering branches
and raising it up and over
the gravel to create this twig trellis.

Now water goes up and over to the other side
and I can drive my tractor under it
without damaging the lines :)

I found this pipe with a perch,
Steve built it for a project then didn't need it,
so it was laying in his junk pile.
I think it's the perfect spot to add a birdhouse.
The other side needed a little fun
so I hung this wind chime

And added this abandoned robin's nest.

Under it and at the side
I found this hollow piece of log in the wood pile
and planted it with hens and chickens.

Slowly things are coming along . . .
I enjoy adding whimsy & personality to the garden.
I have a pot of climbing beans started
on one side of this trellis
and morning glories on the other side.
I'll have to take another photo in a month
after they have more time to climb.

Steve calls this my Hippy Gate :)

The green beans are starting to bloom
and this week we ate our first two cherry tomatoes
and our first zucchini.

Harvest is right around the corner . . .
time to start doing my Happy Dance :)
Well, that's life on our little acre.
Lots of growth, progress, hard work,
and pure country living enjoyment.

Have a great week,

  1. You have created a wonderful sanctuary and I always enjoy seeing the newest additions to the cottage. Those vines are growing really fast aren't they? Last week I picked 3 gallons of raspberries from a friends bushes. She was begging us all to come pick as there was a bumper crop this year. I froze them all individually on cookies sheets and then bagged them. Yum! I hope you're having a wonderful summer.

  3. Love your new gate and what an awesome idea for the trellis! We had tons of raspberries bushes back in Ohio when we lived there and we had to pick fast to keep the birds and foxes, etc off them, lol. We pruned as well and it really helps! Your yard is just lovely!! Have a wonderful evening.

    Blessings,

    1. Hi Jill, thanks for stopping by to visit. I planted those three raspberry bushes three years ago and this was my first year to prune them back. I'm new at gardening and I'm learning as I go, with the help of You Tube. It's my go-to for everything. I'm a visual learner and the videos are wonderful. It tickles me that you like my trellis . . . it was fun to build and see it come together, then when it actually worked and I had water on that side I was pleased as punch :)

  4. You are very clever with the pipe trellis, Connie. The watering will be easier because of your ingenuity! Your apricots are so pretty and healthy looking! I agree that whimsy adds charm to the garden. I enjoyed seeing your progress. You are quite industrious. ♥

    1. You know I go outside with one thing in mind and then one thing leads to another and before you know it I've worked all day. There's something about being outside and working in the garden that just soothes my soul. It is great having water on that side now . . . we live in a hot dry climate so watering is very important. Thanks so much for visiting and for leaving a comment . . . it's the only way that I know you were here. I wish there was a way to have lemonade and cookies set out for my sweet blogging sisters when they visit :)

    1. I like things pretty in the garden and have always admired anything made of twigs and branches. Adding whimsy but keeping it natural is a plus. I am just very happy that my idea actually worked, and that the water passed over and down to the other side :)

  6. So clever! Love your "hippy garden." Your grape vines really took off.
I am fighting the battle of mud daubers again. They love to build around the front entry.
And they are stubborn. sigh. Part of summer. The fun with the not so fun.
Thank you for sharing photos of your lovely yard.

    1. There are things about every season that are not so pleasant, but I think the good out weighs the bad. Around here each year is different. One year we had a terrible problem with yellow jackets, they were everywhere. This year it's ear wigs. Then there are those crisp cool mornings, song birds, fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh bouquets from the garden, sunshine, going barefoot and wearing sandals, the list goes on and on . . . oh the joys of summer :) Have a lovely day.

  7. Have you heard of the variety of raspberries called Anne Yellow? When we went on a garden tour last month one home had
yellow raspberries and the fellow said they were the tastiest he had ever grown and they don't need all that pruning that regular ones need. He said he bought one plant 3 years ago and from that one plant he now had a nice row. Anyway, just wanted to mention this.

  8. Your apricots look lovely! I love the idea with the pvc pipe! My MIL had a quilting frame made out of pvc pipe. What a great invention! I would never have thought to paint it brown. Everything looks so cute in your garden. You are so creative! And Hippie gate!!! What a compliment!!!!

    1. It sure makes it nice having the water on that side of the garden. I'm feeling quite spoiled with my drip-lines, my gardening chores are much easier now. I'm happy you like my Hippy Gate . . . it was fun to make :) Who knew that I would turn into such a gardener, before buying this little acre we never had a garden. There is just so much pleasure in eating food that you've grown yourself.

  13. Oh my Connie you come up with the greatest ideas, I love the little trellis you made so you can have the water but still drive through with your tractor and all the fun things you are adding to it. how exciting to see everything coming out. That looks like a lot of work on those berry bushes but is a good idea to take care of them before they get out of hand. Our green peppers are getting nice and big and the carrots are coming along nicely too!

    1. I know we have peppers coming out our ears, but the tomatoes are just barely starting. We picked two this week and are waiting on more. Our plan is to make salsa so I hope the peppers keep producing until we have enough tomatoes for canning. We're down to one jar of salsa from last years crop. I am delighted that you like my trellis, It was a lot of work, but I'm really liking how it turned out. The other day we have some wind and I notice a branch down from one of our trees out front . . . I'll be adding that to the trellis and any more that fall in the future. Isn't it wonderful having fresh from the garden produce on the table?

    1. I looked on You Tube for videos on pruning back raspberry vines and after watching 3 or 4 videos, I decided to get out there and do it. Some of the videos had different opinions on how and when to do it, so I had to take in all the information and then do it my way. I just took from each video what I thought would work with my plants and my capabilities. Raspberries are pretty hardy plants and I really don't think that you can hurt them.
I'm happy that you like my twig arbor . . . I do think that we have similar tastes :)

    1. Sweet girl, we have a mutual admiration going on here. I so admire you for the way you and your husband go out and explore all the small bookshops, thrift shops and cafes in your surroundings. You could write a book on finding all the unique places to visiting in your area. Most people these days jump in the car and drive hundreds of miles or purchase plane tickets in order to seek adventure, but the two of you find it in your own backyards. It is a true gift . . . we had a friend like that in Seattle and when we would visit him, he took us to hidden gems throughout the city. The amazing little jewels that the tourist guide never discovered, but where the locals gathered, because the food was the best, or the shopping was enchanting. Then there is your garden and patio, you have taken small spaces and made every inch of them not only usable but charming and restful. That takes talent. We could learn from each other, dear friend. Thank you for being such a kind blogging sister and always encouraging me on my projects.

  18. Wow Connie! That is all I can say! wow..... wow... you are so creative with the fun things you do in your garden! Love your "hippy gate".... who would have thunk you could use PVC pipe like that? How totally ingenious you are. I've been contemplating how to get a watering system across our gravel area which is kind of our "patio" for now.. over to all my tubs of flowers and plants.. as the hose would have to be walked on and would be in the way. Your arbor gives me some food for thought! A person would never know that it's for a pipe going across there. And everything else you've done makes it look so quirky and fun... love the hens and chicks in the log, the hanging sunflower, the climbing fines.. just everything. I can imagine it WAS alot of work too... it sure feels good to work hard and accomplish something doesn't it? I love it. Oh.. and love your scarecrow too with the pink shirt! I sure hope you went and had cookies and lemonade on the front porch when you were done... sigh. I also have 3 raspberry plants that I hauled from Washougal, WA when we moved here 5 years ago.. they lived in a planter for most of the time and survived (well I originally had five) and now they gave me quite a bit of fruit this year for the first time. I was so happy. I love going out in the morning and just eating them right off the vines. Mine might be everbearing and need to be pruned differently I think. I've also used YouTube to try to figure out how to prune mine. I think all the old growth that bore the fruit is what needs to go, and then leave the new shoots (that are now 5 feet tall!) to bear next year. I like to transplant a few of the new shoots in the early spring, to make my row longer. I also did add a plant that is the yellow raspberries. They ARE supposed to be the sweetest of all varieties. I had a boss in Hood River, Oregon who had an organic orchard and he grew organic gold raspberries. He would bring in baskets for me and they were ever so sweet! I wanted to have my own bush.. so hope it bears next year. We are thinking of maybe putting in some raised beds this fall. Our back lawn is really bad on one side.. the ground is as hard as cement so would be a good spot for raised beds, plus gets sun almost all day long. Oh such fun and so much work! But I want to continue to do it while I can! I just turned 70! Yikes..... hugs to you on this very HOT Sunday! Marilyn

    1. Marilyn we are both in the same boat . . . I am always thinking about getting things done now, because I don't know how many more years I'll be able to do this. In fact I went to town today and bought a bottle of Geritol Liquid High Potency B-Vitamins & Iron Liquid Supplement Energy Support, there's a name for ya, LOL. I've just been feeling run down lately and need a boost. This has help in the past, so I hope it does now. My 72nd is just around the corner :)

  19. I could look at your yard for hours...so many interesting and artsy pieces to discover. I am in love with the way you painted the pvc brown and added twigs to disguise it. So pretty and so ingenuitive. The vine growing in the first picture is so pretty. It is going to be gorgeous when it covers all the way across. I wish I had your talent for making a yard pretty. I am so envious! LOL...:) Have a wonderful week my friend!

Right now your life is very busy with family and work :) When you become an empty nester with no job to go to each morning, you have to find things you love doing to occupy your time . . . if I didn't stay busy I would go mad. I love having projects.
