Snap Out Of It!

I was replying to a comment
on my last post . . .
when a sweet memory of Dad drifted
into my mind.
I've had a big case of the blues lately.
I contribute a lot of it to the
cold weather and grey skies
dragging on and on . . .

Then I've also had a few
health issues . . . but who at my age
doesn't, right?

So, I've been spending a great deal of
my time wishing for Spring!
Feeling like getting outside
and moving will truly help my attitude.

Then I heard my Dad say,
  "Don't wish your life away,
there is plenty to enjoy today"

So this post is about enjoying today.

Each day is a gift
whether or not the sun is shining
and whether or not things are going
along perfectly smooth :)

Sometimes the road of life is bumpy,
but we need to enjoy that ride, too.

Our heavenly Father doesn't hide from us,
when we are feeling low . . .
we just need to look up.
He's always there . . . always!

So, I have decided to . . .
Snap out of it!
Plan my garden,
start some seeds
and enjoy the restfulness that will be gone,
when garden weather gets here.
 Keep Smiling!
There is so much to be grateful for.

Your blogging sister,
Connie :)

  1. I don't think I have ever read a gloomy post from you Connie, so don't worry..I am glad you have picked yourself up and snapped out of the blues. I have been the same with a nasty cold that dragged on for weeks. I kept making myself do things then rest. At last it has lifted, and we went and picked up 2 huge bags of litter from the roadside we look after. The walk made us feel better, and we left a nice clean roadside.# people actually thanked us and I hope we "made" their day!

    1. Hi Judy, That sounds like a very good idea, in fact I have been thinking about taking a trash bag and walking up and down our road collecting garbage. It truly amazes me how many people throw litter and bottles out of their car windows. That is actually something positive that I could do outside before the weather warms up enough to dig in the garden. Just getting out in the fresh air is a huge help.

  2. This has been a long winter with such weather! So cold in January, and right now we are having gusting winds. It's hard just walking outside. I hope you get some warm temps soon. Those little seed starts sure look happy! I have some herbs started too. We'll be out there in the sunshine, digging in the dirt, real soon.

    1. You're right it won't be long. By April our ground is thawed out and even though we can't really plant here until the middle of May, we can dig in the dirt and get our gardens worked and prepared. I admire these women that get out each day, rain, snow or shine and walk and get fresh air, i'm afraid that I become a homebody in bad weather. Spring will be here before long:)

  3. Oh my gosh...my mother would say the same thing to me...I was always wishing for my next birthday, Christmas, camp, vacation etc. My mom would say "don't wish your life away, it will come soon enough." Life was not going fast enough for me, now I wish it would slow down!!! lol!! But I do look forward to that day when God calls his church home....what a day that will be, my Jesus I will see!!! It's nice that you have a place to start your seedlings and I hope your health issues will clear up....yeah, who doesn't have problems in life, we wouldn't appreciate the good times and take them for granted.

    1. Life is certainly an adventure and you are right the troubled times do help us appreciate the good times.
Especial at our age we should be learning to enjoy each day for what it is . . . we can't slow them down and life is short:) Rise and shine and give God the glory . . . each day is a blessing.

    1. I know, it is hard to work in the garden and not feel happy. I even enjoy pulling weeds. It seems the older I get the more I want to be inside in the winter. I guess that's why so many people send their winters in warm climates. I enjoy seeing the changing season, I just get blue around February and March when it's rainy, windy, snowy and gray . . . remember the movie Annie, she sang a song that had a verse that said, "The sun will be up tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow there'll be sun".
Here's wishing us both a sunny tomorrow:)

  8. I think many of us are yearning for spring this year. Health issues have been an issue this year for us. I’m trying not to wish the days away but it sure will be nice to have some warmth after this long winter.

    1. It certainly will be nice . . . we have had a couple days in the last couple weeks that were teasers, but won't it be nice when we can hang our winter coats in the closet for good:)

  9. It has been a long Winter and we have certainly been teased a little, so many signs of Spring and then temperatures dropping once again. Hopefully we are almost there and we can get out and about and back into the garden. Sending you a hug in the hope that it will be a comfort.

  10. Aah yes, a smile is worth more than any one of us will know. Love this post, Connie. Getting older is not much fun is it....there is always a new ache that we did not have yesterday. May Spring soon arrive at your place and those seedlings of yours grown into beautiful flowers. Also, just think of the fun travels you and your husband will enjoy in that gorgeous camper of yours. Now that would put a wide smile on my face. Have a beautiful day, lovely lady.

    1. It's very true, anytime we have the blues, if we just stop and start counting our blessings, we soon realize that there is absolutely no need to feel blue. God is good . . . spring will arrive in His timing and I am going to enjoy today:)

  11. You know just the other day when I was saying to myself that I couldn't wait for my day off it occurred to me how often I do that and I'm just wishing my life away. These days fly by fast enough and we need to enjoy each one for what it is. Great post and I think I'll snap out of it with you :)

  13. Great words of wisdom from your dad , I copied them down so I can also live by them. Starting your seeds is a great idea so what are you all planting anyway....you always have such a bountiful garden Don't worry spring will be with you soon enough. Lisa@ Sweet Tea N' Salty Air

    1. Hi Lisa, Well, for the last few years I have been starting my pepper and tomato plants inside. Most of the other vegetable seeds can be planted in the ground around here after our frost season. Tomato plants and pepper plants are anywhere from $3 to $5 each, so for a package of seeds I can have all that we want and spares to give away. This year I decided to also start some of the flower seeds inside. I will still plant zinnias, sunflowers and marigold outside after frost, but i've started viola, snapdragon, rubbeckia, pentunia and convolvulus inside. It will be fun to see how they do. I may just have a huge flower garden this year :)

  15. The end of winter seems endless sometimes, doesn't it? Giving one's head a mental shake and choosing to do something productive is a great way to get out of the blues. I hope you are smiling today, and that there is sunshine outside. Hugs to you from a sunny island in Canada. (at last we have sunshine!)

  16. I understand the gloomy days that last for many days in a row can start to bring me a bit down too. Sorry to hear about the health issues but I do agree that seems to happen the older I get, I need to get in better shape, I usually go down hill a bit in the winter time, I seem to have many excuses why not to walk out in that cold. Looks like you have a wonderful start on your garden. I bought some starter pots today when we went out and hope to get started on them next week. Hope you have a better week ahead!

    1. Hi Connie, your comments are always so kindhearted and encouraging. I truly appreciate your friendship. If we can find ways to make March an enjoyable journey, then before we know it April will be here with it's warmer days. So, I have decided to find things to do this month that will make me happy and even spread a little joy to others. One sister commented about getting out and cleaning litter on the road. So, today I started and got out for awhile and filled half our trash can. It is amazing how many people litter a long our roadsides. I also received an email from a dear friend that lives in an assisted living. I forget how much she appreciates company, so I'm putting that on my calendar for next week. I know from experience that the best way to stop thinking about myself is to get out and do for others . . . I just haven't been doing it lately. Shame on me . . . but next week is going to chance that:) Blogging is such a great way to have an open discussion with caring people and to get help through their sharing of ideas and thoughts on an issue. I'm glad that I did this post, because it has opened my mind to ways that I can help myself Snap Out Of It :)

  19. This was a wonderful and uplifting quick post Connie! Love your Dad's quote, and it's so true. My dad always said "Live each day like it's your last". Well, that would be a very busy day for me, but I've been thinking on it a lot the last couple of weeks. I guess it's that hint of Spring that has us all shaking off the winter duldrums and itching to get outside again. I've spent far too long indoors this winter with the new crew of small kids in my care. Babies aren't always that happy in the subzero cold! Reading through everyone's comments here has made me want to get out and tidy the yard a bit (snow is gone anyway) so that I can get the kids outside to play again. I also need to give my home some TLC today and tidy away some clutter which always makes me feel 100% better about being stuck indoors. Oh, and the dog needs a walk, and .... thanks for the inspiration!! I hope your ailments correct themselves soon.

    1. Hello Wendy, thank you . . . getting outside for just a little while can be so uplifting, but it's just hard to do when the weather is bad. Hard for me anyway, but I see so many that grin and bare it and are healthier because of that choice. I going to start telling myself that it's March not January or February and I can bundle up and get outside. I love yard work and there is plenty to start doing. Taking that first step (it's always the hardest) is sometimes all you need to get moving. It's only 17 more days until Spring . . . I think I can do that. Then when it gets here I'll have my flower beds clean and I'll be ready to watch the tulips bloom:)

  20. Connie, I love that your father said, "don't wish your life away." My FIL said that to me when my twins were babies. I was felling overwhelmed and said I would be so glad when the twins were no longer in diapers and taking a bottle." LOL I wish I had just sat and talked to Pops about that statement. For now he is gone and my twins are mommies and one is a grandmother. I wish I had them all back...all those days, and all those baby giggles. I hope you are feeling better. I get the blues too ,when it is lots of gray days in a row. I love how much work you put into your gardens. You grow some wonderful foods. Plus soon you'll be able to camp out in the camper...even in your own driveway to get it broke in. :) Blessings to you dear friend, xoxo, Susie

    1. Time does fly by so fast. I remember when our daughter grew up and left home . . . I longed for the days when she was small and I knew she was all tucked in at night safe and sound. It's not easy being a Mom. Sometimes I think our hearts are too tender for the job. Then again maybe our tender hearts makes us better prepared for the job :)

  21. I heard this the other day. True happiness is in the present. Tomorrow is gone and tomorrow hasn't been written. Today is where we find our happiness and to be carry over into our tomorrows. I love your dad quote it is very true. I love how you are planning for your garden. I have been wanting to get some seed starters for my greenhouse. Maybe this week! God is in our today's and He will be in our tomorrows. So, good to know huh!

  24. I do too get the blues during the winter, but have been trying to appreciate even the gray winter days, and do something fun inside that gives me joy. And I really have been enjoying not having to go out and work in the yard as I'm having problems with my back and spine and when I do physical work, I pay for it for days. I'm almost to the point that I don't even want to plant anything this year! That's awful, but leaning over and squatting even bother me and I pay for it. I think this theory of mine will all change once we get some warmer weather, but for now, I'm happy just "being" or reading or crafting a little bit and not rushing to get to summer when it's hot and dusty and so much work to do outside that I really get tired of it! I'm going to HAVE to get hubby to help more, and if he won't, then we won't have much of a garden or flowers this year. Also, I got so tired last year of fighting with the earwigs that chewed up EVERYTHING! Hope you can solve your health issues. I just need a GOOD chiropractor and I know I would feel much much better......you are so good to go out and do some nice things for others... that really does help our states of mind and helps us to feel better.... I must do the same......... hugs to you....Marilyn
