Playing House In The Living Room

Some of you may remember this sign.
I made it last summer from scraps
from Steve's wood pile.

It was the boost that I needed to play
with our living room.

Four years ago I started with these
Walmart light filtering curtains.

They are fine and fit the purpose of
privacy and budget.

When we moved in paint, plumbing,
and a new roof took priority.

Saturday I went to Lowes
and purchased pleated blinds
and curtains.

They look so much nicer in our
little cottage home.

I'm dancing my happy dance :)

Back to the Farmhouse sign . . .
It inspired me to try painting again.
I have canvases in the barn loft
that I have had since before I injured my right hand 8 years ago.

I wanted something with blues and greens
and that had a Spring feeling to it.

Anyway, I had fun painting it.
It's not what I did 8 years ago
before my injury,
but hey, I'm enjoying knowing
that my hand works this well, LOL.
After a year of therapy 3 days a week,
I finally got my thumb and pointer fingers
 moving at normal function.
After that first year, I just kept pushing it,
and today there is not much that I can't do
with that marvelous thumb and finger.
For any of you that needed to hear this,
I just want to encourage you to never give up.

On that note . . . I'll say,

KEEP SMILING!

Your blogging sister,
Connie :)

    1. I've been afraid to even try except for signs, but they are much easier to do. If you mess up on them, you can sanded it off and make it appear even more vintage and worn, LOL. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment. I do love my blogging sisters :)

    1. I was in Lowes checking out their gardening supplies when I decided to roam around the store. I have been looking for fabric like that for years. I bought some many years ago and my neighbor even gave me some that I made curtains for the Art Barn with, but now I couldn't find any in blue and white. So, when I spied these I got excited. I figured the cost and went home to think about it . . . when I couldn't stop thinking about how pretty they would look, I went back and purchased them :) It's was fun tweaking the living room and lightening up the feeling in there. Lisa you have been such a lovely blogging sister, thank you so much for you friendship :)

    1. Good Morning Ann, thank you so much much. I have many of those big canvases up in the loft. It is a 30 X 40 inch canvas. I think that I might have enough to do three more. I'm thinking seasonal, then all I have to do is change them four times a year to have a fresh look :) What do you think ?

    1. The furniture in our living room is brown, large and comfy, but truly lacks any light and airy feel. I think these balance off the masculine and feminine pretty well. I cann't see my hubby living in a totally feminine home and being comfortable, but touches like these blend together very well. We can both appreciate the home more now. He loved the changes, too :)

  7. Hi Connie, I love your drapes. They would go nice in my house! We have just the blinds up. Your painting looks so cheery and I would not have known that you had trouble with your hand. Happy to hear that you persevered and it is doing so well. Doctor's appointment yesterday but no real answers. We are both thinking that my chronic lyme has reared it's ugly head so may be pursuing that. You are so creative. Even in cold weather!!!! Nancy

    1. Thank you so much . . . our room needed lightening up and a touch of Spring and femininity. Something to balance off the heavy masculine furniture. Now there is something for both of us and it blends very well. Kind of like us. Yesterday was our 42 wedding anniversary :)

  11. I need to buy blinds for the big new windows in what used to be the back porch. I wouldn't have thought of going to Lowes to look for them but now I will. We need 6 foot wide ones and I wonder if they'll be too hard for me to open and shut. Maybe I'll go for two 3 ft ones in each window. So glad you posted that.
I like your signs but the picture with the old truck really shows your talent!

    1. Good luck deciding on blinds, it's a big decision. At least it was for me. I wanted to be sure they were what I really wanted before spending the money, because I'll be living with them for a long time. These are pleated and in the mud room I have old fashioned pull down shades. I hate mini blinds, they are just to much work keeping them dusted.

    1. I painted our living room yellow to brighten it up, but with our brown furniture it still needed more. It always seemed a little bit heavy and sad. I think these light touches are what it was needing. I am so sorry you anyone with back pain. I hurt my back in my twenties and have had pain ever since, but I learned a few exercises that I do in bed each morning before getting up, that have helped me amazingly. I used to live at the chiropractor before doing these. I know that all back problems are not the same. I'll be praying . . . don't give up :)

  14. Oh Connie I'm swooning with those curtains! They look almost like a toile to me.. and I've been looking for some red, burgundy or pink (yes pink!) toile curtains. I think I'm too lazy to make some, even with the sewing roll I've been on. I remember I did see lots of drapes and curtains in Lowes! I'll have to go back and pay them a visit. It's about 50 miles from me but could make a day of it. Those blues really do brighten up your room... and your painting is wonderful. You are SO talented is so many ways! I'm glad your hand is better. I know you've mentioned it before and I can't remember if it was an accident or what. Our bodies do sometimes heal, even if it takes years and years! You are a real artist and glad you can continue with it. My hubby doesn't seem to mind the pastels (and even pinks) that I love, so I need to go for it more in my living and dining room. All the furniture is dark and I want to paint at least one hutch white! Maybe this summer............. take care.... we still don't have spring here.... boo hoo... Marilyn

    1. Hi Marilyn, I thought that we were getting some spring weather, but it was just another tease. Although I do have a few tulips starting to bloom on the south side of the house :) That's a good sign! I noticed that Walmart has a pink toile with a cream background in there heavier weight Waverly fabrics. You might want to check that out too. These curtains gave our living room a lighter feel; our furniture is all brown too and it seemed too heavy before. I'm liking the lighter feel , it makes me feel lighter and happier when i'm in that room now :) Good luck finding your perfect curtains.

Wow that painting is Awesome, love the pop of red with the truck, I would say your hand is working very well! So glad you didn't give up, I have seen people give up and just think if they would have done their exercise and pushed through how much different their life could have been.

    1. I have to sit and exercise my hand daily, just because I do not want to loose the mobility that I have gotten back. As you start getting older the joints in any injury can become very stiff if not used. There are just too many things that I enjoy doing, so that is a great motivator for pushing through pain. Thank you, Connie, for all your sweet words. I appreciate your blogging friendship, you're a sweetheart:)

    1. Thank you. I think that people with injuries need to heard about others persevering through the painful long therapy, but know that if they put up with it there are rewards at the end. There is a prize at the end of the race :) Your story is very inspiring.

    1. Hello Mildred, thanks for your sweet and very kind words. It feels good to have given our little living room a bit of cheeriness . . . it always seems a little dark and sad, before. When we bought this place four years ago it was a mess and all of our budget went for electric, plumbing, a new roof, windows, etc. There was money for paint, but that was the length of the cosmetic budget. Little along I have added smaller projects like these, but it takes time. We do not like being in debt, so it's save up, do a job and then save up again, LOL. Thank you for following my blog, I truly appreciate it and will be looking forward to sharing ideas. I love making new friends.

I'm glad to hear you have regained the use of your hand again, and are able to get back into something you love to do. 1. Thank you, Wendy :) I still have three fingers on my right hand that will not bend, but as long as my thumb and pointer finger are working this well I am a happy camper. I thought for a long time that I would never be able to do some of the things that I enjoy . . . but I've just learned to hold brushed, needles and pens ad pencils and little bit differently. I will not let an injury stop me from enjoying want I love doing. It took a full year of therapy to just get my hand where it is today, but well worth the pain and effort. I encourage those in therapy to stick with it, even when it seems hopeless.
