Warm Weather At Last !
This is being said all over America :)
Before I show you the garden progress,
I want to show you this.
A sweet handmade card from Nancy Davis
of
Cozy Thyme Cottage
http://cozythymecottage.blogspot.com/
Nancy is a sweetheart.
She had 7 yard long bean seeds,
and after hearing that I was looking for
them, she mailed me 4 of hers.
That's true generosity!
I have planted them here.
Along with two rows of bush beans,
one row of cabbage
and space for peppers, to be planted soon.
Here's our rhubarb.
Here are my peppers waiting to be planted.
Here are some of our tomatoes.
last Fall we covered the beds in leaves . . .
I could not believe how rich the soil looks under
those decaying leaves and how many earth worms we have :)
This bed is waiting for romaine lettuce and
the tires behind are for watermelon :)
I discovered planting in tires last year.
Cucumber seem to love them :)
This is our raspberry patch . . .looking good!
And these are our blackberries.
We are just starting our fifth year living here,
and this year I can tell that my composting
is starting to pay off :)
Walking around the yard you can see our lilacs.
I have been getting so much enjoyment
from their heavenly aroma.
So have the bees.
This is one of our white lilac bushes.
The snowball bush is also starting to bloom.
The roses are growing along the fences.
And the bleeding heart is blooming.
They were all waiting on warm weather.
We have a few tulips that are late bloomers still gracing the yard.
And the hay field across the road is turning green.
Isn't it pretty?
The porch is ready for drop in company . . .
if you're in the neighborhood,
drop by . . . I'll fix tea :)
Do you know what this is?
Well, I haven't had a lot of time
for it . . . but I plan on doing a lot of this . . .
Once the garden is all planted,
I think that I can watch it grow
from this location in the hammock swing :)
~~~~~*****~~~~~
I know it looks like hard work . . .
but somebody has to do it.
That's my post this week . . .
have you been out enjoying the warm weather?
Whatever you are doing . . .
do it with a
SMILE :)
Your blogging sister,
Your garden looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThank you . . . It's a big yard and garden with lots of work, but I love it :)
DeleteOh you make me feel lazy. My energy doesn't hold out long yet.
ReplyDeleteYou've done wonderful things and your photography is terrific.
Be blessed,
Laura of Harvest Lane Cottage
Hi Laura, thank you so much. It's a lot of work, but it keeps me going . . . my body longs for springtime and digging in the dirt. Watching plants go from seed to producing food for canning and freezing is a blessing both for the eyes and the soul, it makes me feel very satisfied :)
DeleteOh, pretty, pretty, pretty and you must be so busy, busy, busy! I can hardly keep up to my little courtyard. Love those lilacs! I am trying to harden my tomato and pepper plants without killing them. I think I may have a problem with aphids this year. Maybe that is why my garden did not do well last year. Isn't it exciting and a miracle when we put a seed in the soil and it comes up!! I have a few raspberry bushes but just bought one black raspberry bush a few days ago. It doesn't not look well but I have 45 days to return it so will see. I hope the yard long beans grow for you. Enjoy! Nancy
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing those yard long beans. I have never grown them before, have you? Thank you again for sending them to me, that was beyond sweet :) I just read that if you put banana peels in a gallon jar of warm water and set it outside in the sun for a few days and then water your plants with it, it will keep aphids away. Google it and see what you think about trying it. I think that I will :)
DeleteYour garden is looking a treat. All that hard work is beginning to pay off. You will have a bountiful harvest in no time. Love that swinging chair/hammock.....looks like the perfect place to survey the produce!
ReplyDeleteThat swing is so comfortable. I saw it on Amazon and I'm so happy that I decided to order it. It's taking the place of my old tire swing :) Sometimes grandma needs a swing, too, LOL
DeleteYour yard looks amazing! Everything is thriving and looking so good.
ReplyDeleteI like your neat potting table.
I am amazed at my garden this year, so far, LOL. The soil looks so good this year; all that composting is paying off. We have only had warm enough weather for planting for the past week. I usually do not set by plants out this early, but the forecast says that we are staying warm at night for the next ten days and by then all danger of frost is over. Spring planting always gives me hope for the future. I guess that is true of all gardeners, otherwise why would we do all that hard work :)
DeleteHi Connie wow what a beautiful yard you have and your garden is amazing ,love those tulips such a pretty colour,thankyou for sharing with us xx
ReplyDeleteHi there Shez, it is great to have you stop by and thank you for the kind words. I guess I am planting and hoping in a lovely crop this year, just as you are enjoying the end of the growing season. Something about Spring, just gives me a boost of energy and a thrill about getting my hands dirty in the warm soil :) Maybe it goes back to making mud-pies as a little girl. Did you ever do that?
DeleteWhat a beautiful post full of wonderful things. Your garden is amazing. Yes, Nancy is a very generous person. I have been on the receiving end of that generosity. . My rhubarb is ready to pick. I think I’ll be pulling some tomorrow and freezing it and taking some for one of the elderly ladies at church who loves rhubarb The hammock looks like a wonderful place to watch your garden grow. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Betsy
I can't believe how comfortable that hammock swing is. I can close my eyes and it feels like I am on our old sailboat. I do miss it, but it was just too much work and our yard and garden take up enough of our time. I hope you made it to the lake and your RV and had some relaxing time this last weekend :)
DeleteYour climate there must be so different from ours here in Madras! I thought they were similar, but all of your plants and flowers and shrubs, etc. are absolutely THRIVING compared to my plants here! Do you put anything on your raspberries? Yours are thriving and mine are so puny! My lilac is puny and only looks half alive.... my "lawn" if you can call it that is mostly weeds! Your lawn looks so lush and green! Do you fertilize it? All of your raised beds are so happily awaiting their residents... love the potting bench/bed headboard! (I think!). You amaze me with how big your garden and planters are.... we planted two trees today and I hope they survive.... shrubs in our yard just don't seem to survive... I think our soil is very poor. I'm starting to put compost in holes when I plant shrubs (store bought) as we don't have a compost pile or leaves or pine needles or anything to add to it. Maybe my green thumb is turning blue or something as I'm not having luck with much. What elevation do you live at? Maybe that has something to do with it.... we ARE having some warmer days which is really nice. I usually don't put much out until June 1st or so, but am planting some flowers earlier this year too. Enjoy that swing, once you are done with all that work!!! Hugs.. Marilyn
ReplyDeleteHi Marilyn, my suggestion is to save all your vegetable scraps along with coffee grounds and egg shells . . . and just dig a little hole and bury them about six inches away from a plant. Then in a couple days do it again for another plant. You don't need a compost pile, just a hole near a plant. It's the best fertilizer you can use. Oh, and save our grass clipping and bed them up around the stems of your plants. It has taken me four years of doing this, but the results now are amazing. We normally don't plant outside until after May 15, but we have had an early warm spell and the forecast seems to be staying that way. I'm enjoying getting an early start. If your weather is like Bend, then I know that you can get freeze in July, that's not good vegetable growing weather, but maybe a greenhouse would work better for you. Start watching for old windows or maybe find a contractor that remodels. They have to haul those old windows to the recycler or the dump, they would much rather give them to you. These are just suggestions, but it's a shame to throw away your vegetable scraps, they are gold to your garden plants. Worms love them and worms are sweet little helpers to the garden.
DeleteThank you for the great advice Connie... on using coffee grounds, egg shells, etc. and just planting them by the plant. I may try that. Years ago I had friends who fished alot, and they would bury the fish guts, etc. underneath their tomatoes! Their tomatoes absolutely loved them. My dad used to use fish fertilizer on his plants too. Things I forget and need to be reminded of. Hubby drinks coffee so lots of grounds.. and we eat alot of eggs so lots of shells.. too bad we don't fish!
DeleteWOW, your garden is already looking great. The lilacs and snowball take me back to the house I grew up in. We had several large bushes of both along the property line. I love the scent of the lilacs.
ReplyDeleteHi Ann, me too! When we moved here and I saw all the lilac brushes I was in heaven. The rest of the place was in need of work, but the former owners did plant those beautiful lilacs and I am forever grateful :)
DeleteWOW...now THAT is a garden. Yes, lots of work but it's all gonna be so tasty....the flowers are beautiful....happy spring.
ReplyDeleteHi BJ, LOL, I only showed you about a third of it. I do love digging in the dirt in the springtime :) Maybe it all goes back to making mud-pies as a little girl. Did you do that?
DeleteOh your garden looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteYour scare looks cute to me... not scary at all ♥
Love the flower pics so much.
Ann
Hello Ann, thank you so much for stopping by to visit. The garden is a lot of work, but the rewards are amazing :)
Deleteawww, BOOM, all of a sudden, it's spring and we are so happy here in new jersey!! we have been working on our yard and gardens the last few days and it is almost time to bring my vegetable plants outdoors. i could not be more excited. your gardens look great - love those tire gardens!!
ReplyDeleteyour tulips are gorgeous and so are the lilacs. the porch also looks wonderful!!
I went out today and planted 27 pepper plants . . . do you think we'll have enough, LOL. I start my plants for seed and I still have plenty to give away to neighbors and friends :)
DeleteGlad to hear you are having warmer weather now, Connie. That is a delightful picture of you on the hammock. How wonderful to grow raspberries and watermelon! Your garden is coming along nicely. Love your front porch and that red chair.
ReplyDeleteHappy May days, Connie.
~Sheri
We get a lot of enjoyment for our front porch. We love sitting out there during a rain storm and when the neighboring farmer is mowing and bailing his hay :)
DeleteThings are looking fabulous! I have some old tires around here I was going to toss but planting in them sounds like a great idea! Its so different your plants compared to my sw florida plants I do have basil though ....I have succulents and many tropical flowers like hibiscus and beds of spiderplants that I give away for peoples porches and a ton of Aloe vera that I use for visitors sunburns and making soap. Whats so weird here is things just pop up out of no where. Before we had hurricane Irma I had a bunch of starter plants going and they just got demolished so now I am finding stuff here and there like parsley growing in the middle of my back yard and a huge sunflower starting in one of my flower beds I sure do love it but I never planted them..... crazy! Enjoy your hammock you need to set a little table along side for your sweet tea.. Have fun Lisa @ Sweet Tea N' Salty Air
ReplyDeleteThe first time I went out there I sat a stool beside me with ice tea and then I moved around in the hammock and got it swinging, and split all my tea, LOL. So, I bought one of those quart Ball jars with the handle and straw that the pioneer woman has. I can set it on my lap while I read and it works great.
DeleteAll of your hard work is paying off. Your yard is beautiful with all the flowers already and the garden on its way.
ReplyDeleteSpring came here overnight . . . one day it was still cold and then it got warm and has been lovely. I'm so happy the weather has changed, I have more energy when I start getting outside :)
DeleteConnie, your plants look so big and healthy. Everything you plant does good. That was so sweet of Nancy to send you the beans. I've grown those yard long beans for two summer, but this year I cannot find any. We ordered a pack on line and have waited for three weeks for them to arrive. The company has now refunded our money. Don't know what happened. Sure wish I had saved some seed from last year.
ReplyDeleteI had that problem too. The last couple years I have ordered my seed from a catalog that I loved, then this year they decided to stop their seed production and just sell plants. I was so disappointed. They had a cucumber that I loved and now I can't find it. Oh well, I enjoy trying new things, and who knows I might like the seeds that I purchased this year even better. Oh, I watched your daughter's video. Her journals are so pretty. There was also some videos of playing the guitar and singing, was that her . . . I think it was, but not sure?
DeleteThank you Connie for watching Lynn's video. I know sometimes, for me anyways, videos get a little boring. I can't sit still that long. :) Yes, those are videos are of Lynn playing the guitar and singing. She just recently, well three or four years ago, started taking guitar lessons. I've told her that you play the guitar. I'm sure she has visited your blog. I brag about you to Lynn. :)
DeleteI've never been brave enough to do a video . . . just call me chicken, LOL.
DeleteWow things are sure underway in your garden already.
ReplyDeleteAll the pictures are beautiful.
Spring came suddenly (over night) we went from cold weather to warm and it is wonderful :)
DeleteWhat a beautiful garden to walk around in. I long for the huge one we used to have but eventually downsizing has to occur.
ReplyDeleteYour vegi garden is a great size and love your raspberry patch!
Happy gardening,
Suzy
We did the opposite of our friends and family, and instead of downsizing we purchased this acre in the country. I have never had the space to garden before and I'm loving it. Learning to can and put up food for winter is new to me too . . . but it goes to show that you can teach and old dog new tricks, LOL.
DeleteThanks for stopping by and leaving a comment, I do appreciate it and love having company :)
Oh Connie your garden is looking just fantastic, wow that Rhubarb is looking amazing, there is nothing like making a crisp with it. Since spring was slow to coming I just managed to get my Romaine lettuce started so far. Beautiful flowers around your yard, everything looks great. So nice to have a great place to relax and enjoy it all!!
ReplyDeleteI haven't had much time for relaxing, but hopefully that will change. With the drip-lines all working and most of the planting done there should a relaxing period between planting and harvesting time and I'm looking forward to it, LOL.
DeleteYour yard looks like the size I need to downsize to. We have five acres of pasture and it is more than we need. I love your swing and Lilac bushes. We are just starting to get warm here as well. Now if life will just slow down so I can enjoy it. Here hoping for long summer days.
ReplyDeleteWe have an acre and that is all we can handle. All of our friends are downsizing to condos, while we went from a small lot in a tight community to an acre in the country. We love that we did it, this little country home has been a blessing in so many ways :) I have seen too many people reach retirement and downsize to where they have nothing to do . . . this place keep us busy and I think that is a good thing. Tom Petty has a line in a song that says, "if you never slow down, you'll never grow old" . . . and I agree in many ways. The body need to keep moving :)
DeleteMy mom cleaned homes for others until she was 80. She is 88 this year.
DeleteProves my point . . . I love hearing stories like that. You have good genes :)
DeleteSuch a joy to stop by for a visit and admire the beauty of your garden. I have just painted some tyres all ready for planting, it as easier to recycle them than it was to try and get rid of them.
ReplyDeleteI had a small table that I was thinking about trashing this week, and instead I went to Steve's shop and found some red paint and gave it new life, too. Looks like we are thinking along the same lines. I like getting as much life out of something as I can :) "Waste not, want not"
DeleteGreat yard and garden area with a nice variety of plants. Your love of gardening shows. And, oh, those lilac bushes. That's one thing I don't have and need to add to our yard.
ReplyDeleteI was very excited when we bought this place and I saw all the lilacs . . . they are so pretty and their aroma is heavenly, it makes our whole place smell divine :) Thank you for your kind words and your sweet visit.
DeleteConnie your garden is looking so pretty. I can tell you put a lot of hard work into it. I especially love the lilac bushes.
ReplyDeletexx Beca
I love those bushes too. When we bought this little country home and I saw all the lilacs I was on cloud nine :)
DeleteLove your gardens and all your beautiful flowers. Like I've always said, wish I could tour it in person! Your rhubarb is gigantic! I did a double-take on that one!
ReplyDeleteHi Melanie, thanks for stopping by . . . if you lived closer I would say come over and get some of this rhubarb, there is more than I need.
DeleteThank goodness that it has started to warm up and it looks like you have taken full advantage of it! Thanks for the share, love checking out your blog. Need to do some work in my garden. Keep up the posts!
ReplyDeleteGreg Prosmushkin
Thanks for stopping by, and have fun digging in your garden . . . it's a great way to leave the busy world behind :) Take your frustrations out on the weeds, LOL.
DeleteHi Connie, There are pros and cons about any place to live. Positives about the Crafty Home Cottage include the space to do a garden, and then, of course, the energy and dedication you have to get your garden started and going so well. Once again you are an inspiration. Thank you, Connie! John
ReplyDeleteIt is hard work, but the rewards are endless :)
DeleteWonderful and cozy garden!So precious...Hugs.
ReplyDeleteThank you . . . it's provides good exercise and fresh vegetables and fruit. Win/Win :)
DeleteYou have a beautiful home and garden. We missed spring. Went right into summer!
ReplyDeleteOur weather changed pretty fast too. From cold everyday, to 70, 80, and now even 90.
Delete
