Community Pride, LaGrande, Oregon

The City of La Grande, Oregon is a family oriented small-town.
It is the closest thing to Mayberry that you’ll ever see.
This town has a huge sense of community, neighbors are warm and friendly,
and children can play as freely as we did 50 or 75 years ago.

The first settler was in 1861 and during the 1860’s & 1870’s
the town grew rapidly due to the many gold mines in the region
and the rich soil with its agricultural capabilities.
Today it is also the home of Eastern Oregon University,
where our daughter attends nursing school.

This post is about the beautiful homes.
Some homes are small one and two bedroom cottages.
Some are mansions (at least in my definition), and no cookie cutter look a-likes.
Better yet, there are no neighborhood distinctions.
In one block you can see anything from one bedroom cuties to a 6 bedroom
three story ginger bread home.
I love this town and I hope you enjoy this tour of homes.
Even this tiny little brick house was charming.
I personally would remove the chain-link fence
and maybe replace it with a short brick flower bed or a wood fence,
but I think it has potential to be a show stopper.
Our daughter's home is also a fixer upper,
someday when she is through with school
and has more time for her re-do,
I'll post before and after photos.
It is like the one above, in the sense that it needs a little love
and it will be a truly lovely cottage.
I had to take these two barn photos, aren't they wonderful?

The population is just above 13,000,
and the town is nestled a beautiful valley in
the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon.

I hope that I did not bore you with so many photos.
Believe me I could have taken photos all day long.
Driving through La Grande is like watching the fireworks on the Fourth of July.
You keep seeing one beautiful home after another
and you can never decide which is your favorite.

While I was gone on my road trip,
I had many wonderful comments left on my pillow post.
I will be visiting each one of you this week,
as I get my laundry and yard work done.
We had a three day wind storm and our backyard is covered in tree branches.
I picked a good time to be gone :)
I also received a few more followers while I was away,
and I want to send out a warm welcome to them.

Have a wonderful day and keep smiling
I love reading comments, so please let me know you visited, by leaving one :)

  3. I enjoyed all of your wonderful photos. What a great town and a fun place to wander around. I would want to take lots of photos too. I love that all the homes are different and not cookie cutter type homes. I love to see homes with individual character. It's wonderful! Sounds like a great place to live. I'll look forward to future posts when your daughter is able to fix up her cottage for those before and after photos. :-)

    1. She is excited about fixing it up, but for now her priority is school. She has a few plans for summer break, but school is expensive, and time is limited, so most re-dos will come after graduation.

  4. Hi Connie, that was not boring at all - I could have kept on looking at more photos. All those homes are so charming, each in its own special way. What a great place to walk around with camera in hand.

  5. These houses are awesome, each one unique and no cookie cutter houses. And they also all have their yards well taken care of!! I agree with you about that chain link fence, it ruins the look of the house and needs to come down.

    1. Hi Ginny, I have a real dislike for chain-link fences. They are okay for backyards if you have small kids or animals, but when I see them in the front yard I totally had a hard time with them. We have two houses on our block that have done front yard chain-link . . . oh well, it is want it is :)

I've never been there, but some day perhaps I'll see for myself as well :). And the barns... I love them! Thank you for showing glimpses of your journey.

Thanks for sharing these beautiful homes. Every one is gorgeous and so full of character. I would love to live in a small town like that. Not to many of those left anymore. I may have to go there for a visit someday.

  12. Oh Connie,
I have always loved looking at pictures of homes, and I thank you for giving us this tour. These houses are so charming; some of them look like cottages. And they are so green and groomed. I can't pick my favorite one because they are all so nice. My brother in law used to have a ranch in Long Creek, Oregon. I wonder if that's anywhere near La Grande?

Well, I'm going to take a second look at these gorgeous homes.

    Love,
    ~Sheri

    1. Hi Claire, it wasn't damaged, we just had a lot of small limbs all over the place and my back porch was a mess from the dust. Of course I had just spend days the week before I left getting everything cleaned up and ready to just relax and enjoy. This week I get to do it all over again :) It must be just what I needed :)

    1. Hi Lynn, I know what you mean about plastic neighborhoods. We do have very nice neighbors but the homes in your neighborhood all look the same. We purchased our home 30 years ago and before the homes were put up for sale it was an Air Force Base. We check around and at the time it was the best house for the best price and in the 30 years that we have lived here we have made a lot of improvements and it is home. Not everyone can say that they live in a home that is totally paid off . . . so that is a huge plus for us. Starting retirement without house payments is a very good thing :)

  19. Morning Connie, All I can say is "you'll steal my heart" everytime with a post like this!! I think my hidden hobby is gawking at beautiful homes, any shape or size! My great-grandfather was an architect and built many beautiful homes in Tenn. Maybe, I have a little of this "interest" in me...I've always thought if I were younger, I would have LOVED to design houses!! I couldn't pick a favorite (for I would have to see the inside, LOL!) but the yellow victorian cottage with red trim around the window and fretwork on the porch makes me smile. The BROOM in the corner by the door was too sweet!!! Hope you enjoyed your trip and seeing your daughter.....Blessings~~~Roxie

Oh my I want to live in La Grande Oregon! The homes on my street are all different too and I like that and many are so cute, but there are those who don't take pride in their lawns and homes in general and it makes me so sad. I keep thinking that house would be so cute if they just planted flowers or freshened up her paint. Just a little paint and keeping the lawns watered and weeded, make sooooooooooooo much difference. Thank you for following me back and Welcome, to crafty home cottage :)

You don’t have to spend too much on expensive things or crafts when decorating your homes. I think the most vital factor to remember is to be safe, happy, and secure in each other’s home.
