All the preserves in your kitchen look so nice, neat and delicious.
I love Queen Anne Lace and was surprised to find that my seeding carrots looked so much like it . . . I had to look it up . . . then finding out that they are related was another surprise. I remember when going to the Encyclopaedia Britannica was the only way to find these things out. That was a trip to the library if you weren't one of the fortunate that had a set in your home . . . we were not, LOL. Now it is just a click away:)
DeleteHow exciting to find a new family member. You have been busy with canning (we call it bottling here). I freeze all our produce, and now the tomatoes have finished I have lots of sauce and soup ready for the Winter.
ReplyDeleteI've got a load of tomatoes picked and washed sitting on the counter wait for me to canned them this afternoon. I like the sound of bottling them up and love learning new (to me) phrases from my UK blogging friends. My great grandfather was born in Leeds and later married and moved to the Isle of Man, do you live anywhere near there?

I see wooden Christmas presents in our future :) I love the fact that he is starting to find more hobbies to do out in his shop . . . retirement is right around the corner for him and I think hobbies are important.

ReplyDeleteThank you . . . my husbands and I just learned to can last year and we are enjoying eating from the garden all year. It's wonderful to know exactly what is in our food and how they were grown. This is our fourth garden. We started gardening after we moved to the country for our retirement. While our friends were all downsizing we purchased a fixer upper on an acre of land. We call it our gym membership, LOL.

Our home is around 110 years old and when we redid the kitchen we kept it to a minimum . . . new counter-tops, new sink and modern appliances. We kept all the old cupboards . . . I like the vintage look and I like thinking about all the women who have prepared meals in this kitchen before me.
DeleteOh my goodness, Connie, look at all that canning. I think it's wonderful when people still can goods. I recently got some homemade plum and peach jam. And I also got one of those mug rugs this year as a gift. I had never heard of them before, aren't they creative? Your kitchen is so cozy and welcoming, and I've always loved the Queen Anne's Lace. Hi Sheri, it is wonderful having you visit again . . . this old house and land keep us pretty busy, but I am loving our new country life and am enjoying learning to can from my garden. All my life I have worked and only dreamed of gardening and a country way of life, now in my retirement I am living that dream and loving it. Never stop dreaming . . . some dreams do come true:)

Our weather has cooled down a little bit . . . now we are in the mid and high eighties. Around here that could change overnight. I love my Kitchen Aide . . . this is my second one, I wore the first one out, LOL. They sure are nice on the hard working recipes like bread and cookie dough. I don't know if I could kneed dough for twenty minutes anymore with my arthritis. Here's wishing you a lovely day and thanks so much for stopping in to visit :)

ReplyDeleteHi Nancy, we still have three or four weeks of warm weather (usually) but that can chance at the drop of a hat. I am actually looking forward to cooler weather and the crisp air of Autumn. You are so sweet and thank you again for the mug rug, I love it!
DeleteYour kitchen looks so wonderful with all the beautiful jars of garden goodies! I would love some open shelves like that. How fun to display it all right there! I would love a Kitchen aid mixer too for making my gluten free bread. I tried my bread machine but it didn't turn out too well. Real gluten free bread is something I have as yet to attain (homemade). Happy Birthday to you too! Ours are close together.. mine was in late June. Steve's wooden bowl is gorgeous. How fun for a man to find a hobby. I'm still trying to get mine to find "something" to do besides sit at the computer most of the day! He says he wants to work with wood and has some tools still in the boxes! A girl can hope though. Our weather is cooling down a little bit too.. only in the 80's now. I notice one night next week will get down to 37! My flowers are all fading and looking dried out already. Interesting about the Queen Anne's Lace... it always grew in huge amounts when I live up in Washougal, WA (east of Vancouver, WA).. and I've taken many of photo of it as I love it's intricate look. I just discovered a neighbor who has a plum tree and they're ripe... so I get to go over this weekend and gather them ALL up.... I'm going to make plum jam! Yum. I used to gather wild plums years ago up by Washougal. It must have been an old orchard as there were many plum trees wild along a gravel road. You guys are sure going to town on your canning! ReplyDeleteI've experienced finding old fruit trees along hiking trails and old abandoned homesteads . . . free for the picking. They never get sprayed or pruned and cared for, but sometimes still grow amazingly delicious fruit. When I was a kid playing in the woods in Indiana, once in a while you would come across a huge old apple tree and I always wondered if it could have been planted by Johnny Appleseed . . . it's very possible, that was part of the territory where he roamed :) Don't you think that, that his is a sweet legacy to leave behind and be remembered for?

Hi Karen, it is lovely to have you visit. It's still a little strange to me thinking about the seasons being the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere, but I do enjoy getting out of the snow in the winter by touring the gardens of my SH blogging sisters. So I've been told that canning is called bottling in the UK. What do you call it? I kind of like the term bottling, after all we are putting them into glass jars. Thank you for your sweet words concerning my projects, I do appreciate hearing them . . . they are all a lot of work, but work done with love and a happy heart :)

Recently, I've been making pot/pan rugs --a little bigger than potholders-- to provide landing places on my new Formica countertop (which doesn't like hot pots.) An excuse to add a different kind of warmth to my kitchen. ;-) Carrot flowers! Beautiful in the sunshine and in the dark below ground. (Must be a sermon there.) Congratulations on a new granddaughter. One can never have too many.

Hi Linda, thank you for the sweet visit. As for canning I learned to can tomatoes last summer and this year I am doing much more, but all with the help of You Tube. It is a good feeling being able to not just eat from the garden in the summer, but to eat from it all year. It was very intimidating at first and when I watch a video, I watch it three or four time before tackling the task. So far, so good :) I'm excited about getting to know you better and do hope that you will visit again and follow me back. I have met the nicest people through blogging:)
