Before & After ~ Kitchen Sign Make Over

A few weeks ago I showed you this sign that I made for my kitchen,
using wallpaper sample books.
Until Butchy is feeling better, I don't want to leave him alone,
so I decided to go out to the shop and check our left over paint cans.
I found two cans that I got from Ace Hardware on free paint day.
A can of aqua from last Fall and a can of turquoise from this Spring.
So I decided to see what I could do to give our kitchen a free or almost free make over.
I started painting the walls aqua,
and this sign just didn't work with what I had in mind.
Here's my sign re-do :)

The hen and rooster that I used was from . . . guess, a wallpaper sample book.
I also had a textured wallpaper boarder that I picked up at Goodwill a year or so ago.
I always keep my eyes open for pretty wallpaper at yard sales and thrift stores.

Here you can see the aqua wall.
Believe it or not, if I use primer, I can paint my three main walls with a quart of paint.
There are so many doors and cupboards that I really do not have much wall space.
I'll probably have to actually get out the checkbook
and purchase one quart for my accent wall.
That is a re-do on a budget, right:)
I love it!

I made my stencils on my Cricut cutter
and painted them with a little dab of craft acrylic paint.

Here's my finished sign.
I found some wood trim scraps in Steve's wood pile to add to each end.
Big difference . . . I was ready for a change,
but planned to do it this fall.
I can work in the kitchen a little bit each day
and before you know it . . . new kitchen :)

Butchy is feeling much better.
His tube is out and the report on his skin was wonderful.
It had been pulled away from his body, and the our Vet said that it could die.
If that happens they have to treat it like an open wound.
Praise God it's okay and he's doing very well.
Thank you all for your prayers.
God loves all of his marvelous creatures.

This song has been in my heart this week:

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

 ~~~~~*****~~~~~
Don't let your circumstances steal your joy.
Wishing you all a very good day.
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
Your blogging sister,
 Connie :)
  1. Oh- I love that old hymn. I can still hear the pastor's wife and her friend singing that-sitting side by side in the pew.
    Your sign turned out great and I can't wait to see the whole kitchen all aqua-fied! xo Diana
    So glad to hear that Butchy is doing better, I've been away from the blogging circle a couple of months so I have lots of catching up to do.
    Off to read some of your prior posts to see what you've been up to.
    1. Oh you have know idea, our Vet was really afraid of compilations that would arise over his first week that would require much more care, but he did beautifully. It just goes to show that our Lord loves little doggies, too. Butchy had so many sweet ladies, all over this big wide world praying for him, how could he loose :)
    1. Hi Daniela, I enjoy freebies and almost frees, too. If you don't already know, Ace Hardware has a free quart of paint give-a-way a couple times a year. It's a good thing :)
  6. I am so glad he is better, and I have always adored this song! Your makeover is fantastic! The sign is so much more modern now. My first question was going to be...how did you paint the whole kitchen with one little can, so thanks for the explanation. Now if I could only figure out the difference between turquoise and aqua...
  8. Connie-
    I like the make over on the sign. Of course, I love the chickens. :)
    I get the free samples from Ace too.
    Twice I got the same color...I thought I'd do a bigger project. Didn't happen. So I have extra.
    I love it when they give free paint away.
    I just wish...they'd give the "Red" tones away.
    They always say...'can't do red'
    Aw, well.
    One day I'll splurge and just buy some RED!
    -- glad to hear Butchy is on the mend.
    1. Hi Pat, thanks for dropping in to visit . . . I've never asked for red, so I didn't know that. I do know that when I buy acrylic or oil artist paints, the red tones are always a higher price. I'm delighted that you like my sign re-do, and delighted also to say that Butchy is doing better day by day :)
  11. Connie, the sign re-do is great. I never realized you had a market blog until today! I missed that somewhere along the way. I love the color of your walls. Shades of aqua are some of my favorite color. And Free paint is even better!
    I am so glad Butchy is healing. I was telling my Shug about him last night and he said he wonders why dogs have to be mean or territorial at times. Poor little guy. Keep us posted on his progress. I'm glad you are staying home with him. We all need our Mom when we don't feel good.
    1. Hi Cindy, thanks for the sweet visit. I'm happy to say that Butchy is doing very well. He was so sore and has so many staples that we didn't want to lift him any more than necessary. He always sleeps on our bed, down by our feet, so to make him feel comfortable, I've been sleeping on a camping mattress on the living-room floor. I'm happy to say that the last two nights I've been back in the bed. He still has his staples but he doesn't cry when you lift him, now. Day by day he's getting back to normal :)
  15. I am so glad to hear Butchy is improving so well. Praise God. You refurbish signs when you want a change; I move the books around on the bookshelves, or rearrange the furniture! It doesn't take much to make our homes feel like new again does it. And a new color on the walls is an easy way to freshen things up too . . . I'm thinking about doing that soon.
    1. Hi Sara, painting a room makes such a difference, especially in the kitchen, because it challenges you to pull out all the appliances and clean behind everything. I feel so good going into Autumn knowing this is all done. Know I want to put out all my dishes and put in new shelf-paper :) One thing always leads to another :)
As for your rooster pic....I LOVE ROOSTERS!! I had a lot more at my other house but downsized to just one here. It turned out very nice! Blessings~~~GOD is GOOD! Roxie
    1. Hi Carol, Butchy and I walked twice to the mailbox today. When we go to the mailbox we walk all the way around the block. He did great! We came to one fence where they had big barking dogs and it didn't bother him a bit. I thought he'd react and be up-set, but nothing. Everything the Vet told us to watch out for this week, as turned better than they thought . . . We're a happy little family :) Thank you for your prayers, I appreciate how very sweet and concerned my sister bloggers were and all the prayers and good wishes. Our Lord loves little dogs, too.
  19. Oh Connie, I'm so sorry I didn't read about Butchy till now. I'm so happy to hear that he's doing better, what a scare. I've been so busy with my mom and other things this month, but I'm catching up now. We had an event with one of our dogs recently, too. We went camping with both our dogs, and our littlest one has a tendency to nip and play rough. I had warned the campers next to us about him as they had children running around. Our dogs were properly tied up, but the kids camping next to us kept tormenting our dogs by practice casting their fishing lures at the dogs. My littlest dog got riled up wanting to play, and somehow broke out of his collar and went to play with one of the little girls. He ended up slightly scratching her leg (no broken skin or blood thank God), but her parents went ballistic and blew the whole thing up by calling the sheriffs department and everything. What a fiasco! Everything is settled down now, but those parents put their daughter through so much trauma over a small, slight scratch.......they almost made her go through the rabies series of shots even though my doggie is current on his shots. Well enough of that, I'm just so glad Butchy is healing well and I'll keep him in my prayers.
    Hugs,
    Meri
    1. Wow! Sounds like you had quite an ordeal yourself. Butchy is doing better everyday and Wednesday or Thursday he should be getting his staples out. They have been bugging him; he keep jerking his head back to see what's going on each time one pulls on his skin. Thank you for your prayers :)
  20. Glad to hear that Butchy is doing better. Poor puppy, but he has a good mommy taking care of him. I have always loved that song, His eye is on the sparrow. Well today someone prayed for me to learn my guitar....been watching how other people play on Youtube....so many different ways to play, so many techniques. I guess I just have to find my technique...whatever that is.
    I love your new sign....turned out really nice. I just refurbished my wrought iron 40 year old chairs over the weekend...they turned out pretty nice. It's fun redoing things.
    1. Hi Melanie, Thank you . . . Butchy got his staples out today. He is feeling so much better, but a little insecure. He used to be very independent, but now he follows me from room to room . . . I think he feels safer being close to me. That was a pretty scarey ordeal. Size wise it would be like me being attracted by a grizzly bear. Poor little guy. We still have a couple issues to watch out for, but he's coming along splendidly.
