Pumpkins On The Porch

It's that time of year
when we button up the hatches
preparing for a long cold winter.

I've been starting to clean up all of
the garden areas and bring in
the end of the harvest.

All of these spaghetti squash came
from four plants :)
Those on the ground I'm giving away,
and the ones in the cart are headed
to the well-house for winter storage.

I love them with butter and black pepper.

I picked some, not ripe yet, tomatoes
and put them in the well-house to slowly ripen,
out of the way of frost.
It keeps us in tomatoes through Thanksgiving :)
Speaking of the well-house . . .
on the building and on the fence where those two trellis are,
I've planted Trumpet Vines
and look at the petty chrysanthemums.

One of them looks just like a daisy :)

In the house I finally hung my
$10 yard sale mirror.

Remember the pretty little rug from
Nova Scotia that
our sweet neighbor brought me back from
her vacation.

More chrysanthemums.
They make such a pretty display in the fall.

This is what could be my last rose of the season.

These are African daisies.
They are from seed that my sweet
neighbor & friend gave me last spring.

They came up in yellow and orange
and I think that they will reseed themselves.
I love flowers that do that :)
We said that we were going to hold off
on building anymore of the back fence until next spring.
Well, we got the bug to work on it some more
and added another hundred feet or so.
This is that area in the spring
after we cut the dead tree down.

I was looking for before photos of that area
of our property and could not find many.
When things look bad and messy,
we just don't take photos of them, do we?
The grass was so high back there
that we borrowed a neighbor's goats to eat it down.
There was so much junk in that grass
that we could not see it, to get it out.

This is after the goats and
Steve brought a backhoe in to clear the junk.
That dead pine is the one we cut down.

Now I'm waiting for those shrubs to grow
and cover the mounds of dirt and small rubbish.
We still find small pieces of metal
back there when we plant and dig.

It is so much better now, don't you agree?

This has been a long post.
If you are still here, thank you.
I went to the doctor last week and
I'm going again this morning . . .
not feeling well, but on the mend.

 Have a lovely week.

Keep Smiling!

Your blogging sister,
Connie :)

    1. Hi Besty, this place had great bones but was very neglected and a little abused. We have been working nonstop for the two and half years that we've lived here, but it's home and we love it :) Thanks so much for your get well wishes. I am blessed to have people that care, thank you :)

  8. It takes a lot of work with such a big backyard. We use to live on an acre and spent a lot of time and money on it. I don't miss it at all. It's more fun to enjoy yours in pictures and let you do all the work! Thanks for sharing.

  14. Hi, Connie! I'm Nadezda and have read many of your interesting posts. It was a hard work to clear the yard and now it looks very pretty. I did the same, I found many rubbish as bottles, metal, old shoes, toys, etc, cleaning the ground for my future garden.
Happy week, your pumpkins are so nice!

  15. Hey Connie! You've been busy and winter will be on top of us before we know it! I enjoyed seeing your progress. Those pretty squash and tomatoes! The flowers and the fence is looking great! I always love pumpkins and your porch is a favorite of mine! I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well but glad you're on the mend! Take care my friend! I've still not posted yet but maybe soon. The hurricane hit our area hard! We were out of power for 7 days. The water didn't flood us but we were stranded because of flooded roads. It was a real mess! Getting back to normal now though but some completely lost everything. Feeling blessed! The kids have all had upper respiratory infections- lots of coughing here but they're getting better slowly but surely. Thankfully my husband and I didn't get it. I guess that's about it Connie, miss you!!!

    1. Sherry, I am so sorry to hear about your experience with that horrible storm. Seven days is a very long time to be without power. Did you have options for cooking and lights? If we were without power we wouldn't have water neither, do to having a well. I am happy for you that you escaped the flooding . . . so many people lost so much. I do hope your children's respiratory infections clear up very soon. They are in my prayers.

  16. Glad you are feeling somewhat better. sometimes it takes more than one course of antibiotics to kick the bug (if that's what you're taking). Your photos are all gorgeous and love the bright fall colors.. the pumpkins, the mums, your beautiful yard and fence. It does look so improved since your tall grass photo! And I know how much work it must have been too. How neat to have your "well house" to store your vegetables! I just picked the last of my green tomatoes and will wrap them in paper and put them in a dark spot.. and then will have fresh tomatoes for Thanksgiving! Your garden is so pretty all cleaned up for the winter... mine still sits there looking very neglected and frozen... just haven't had time to go out and clean it up.. but will one of these days when we get a nice sunny day... we've had rain and clouds for a good week now here in central Oregon! It's OK... gives me some time for crafting... and to heal also from being sick the first of the month. You take care now.. rest... drink your tea and cuddle up with a quilt. Marilyn

    1. I have found that spaghetti squash and pumpkins are so much fun to grow and probably the easiest crops to flourish and grow with little care. I would like to think that I have a green thumb, but I have got a lot to learn :) Thank you so much for your get well wishes; I truly appreciate them.

  18. You sure are making your acreage look tidy and well taken care of. I am sure it will look better and better every year. It sure can take a lot of work to take care of a place, can't it? Good job! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

    1. It is taking a lot of work whipping this place into shape, but then it will always need work to be maintained. I love being outside and I am a believer in always having things to do. I've seen too many people my age retire and sit around and watch their health go south for lack of exercise. I like to eat, too . . . so the exercise is good for me, LOL.

  19. Sorry to hear your not feeling well, hope you start to feel better! Wow it looks like you have got a wonderful haul there, and your flowers are all still looking so pretty, yes it won't be long now and we will start getting frost and everything will be dying off.

    1. I know I love the time between early spring until the frost takes it all away. Around here we actually have a snowy winter (one that stays on the ground) about every ten years. Therefore; our winters are mostly brown and dead looking . . . a bit depressing. I'm planing on spending most of those days out in the Art Barn quilting. If I can't have a colorful garden, I'll make colorful quilts to brighten my brown winter, LOL.

I am so envious of all of your garden bounty, nothing better than fresh tomatoes. Your yard looks great with it's new fence, what a great idea to work a little at a time when the energy moves you!
