Farmhouse Table

 Dear Friends,

I have been working on a project

dear to my heart.

I took one of Steve's

woodworking counters

and repurposed it into a

new farmhouse dining table.

 He had the base built

and had a big solid door for the top.

First I removed the door

and then I removed the legs and cut

them down from counter to table height.

I added three center supports

(these supports were not needed with the door)

and I purchased pine 1X8's

and build a new top for it.

I was so happy,

I got the legs cut and back on

and everything was level and nice.

Then I watched a few You Tube videos

before building my table top.

In the first video the man said

he cut his legs 30 inches long.

Oh, no I cut mine 27 inches.

So I remeasured the height of my old table.

It was 29 inches . . .

Somewhere between the house and the shop

I changed the measurements by 2 inches.

I felt so stupid . . .

measure twice cut once.

What could I do?

I spent some time brain storming

and found replacement sofa legs

on amazon.

They saved my bacon!

Building the top.

I attached it by counter sinking

screws and then filling them

in with wood putty.

Sometimes, I can't believe how much I learned

by helping Steve with his projects.

This photo is after applying the stain.

 Then I applied 10 or 11 coats

of Tung Oil (sanding in-between 2 coats)

for my final finish.

This photo is after about 5 or 6 coats.

I also found two more chairs at

a second hand store.

And painted then 2 different

shades of blue.

I paid $2 for this one.

 And $10 for this one.

I love this project because it

felt very much like Steve and I were

working on it together :)

Thank you so much for following

along with me  . . .

I have met so many lovely people

through blogging.

God bless you all.

Your blogging sister,

Connie

  3. Connie! That table is just gorgeous and I'm so glad that you had such a sense of peace from working on it. The replacement table feet were just perfect. I think it looks like it was meant to be that way. The patience it must have taken waiting for each coat to dry! Oh my!
    Blessings and huge hugs,

  5. I am so glad to find your post this evening. I've missed you and hoped all was well. Now I see what has been keeping you busy. Your woodworking/fix-it skills --AND strength-- are really impressive. The table and chairs are gorgeous. And the connection with Steve is precious. That table must be quite heavy. I'm hoping you had an extra set or 2 of muscles to get it into the dining room for you. I know you will enjoy it. Your house and garden and crafts room are always decorated so creatively and fun. I love seeing what you are doing next. Most of all, I love seeing your faith expressed in your daily life. May the reality of Christmas sustain you and bring you joy in the days ahead.

  6. Oh my Connie you are amazing! I'm in awe that your transformed the workbench to a dining room table! I learned alot too from helping my ex husband build two different houses.. I helped ALOT on the 2nd one.. hands on stuff, so I learned so much.. but I don't seem to ever attempt to do something totally on my own! That finish is beautiful.. it must have taken you two weeks to do it! Love the sofa feet on the bottom of the legs too and the white looks great. Your blue chairs are wonderful and add so much. What kind of paint did you use? I can imagine you felt Steve was right with you, guiding your hands as you worked, and telling you "no do it this way"!!!!! Again.. you are amazing! And your white fireplace mantel still inspires me to someday have one similar. It's so so farmhouse and cottagey. Take care.... hugs.. Marilyn

    1. Steve built that mantle for the house. It has a stone mantle and Steve built the wooden one to just slide right over the top of it and it fit perfectly. He was a perfectionist with his woodworking. I didn't get that from him, I'm a hit and miss girl.

    1. You're right, it felt like he was right there helping me along the way. Of course he would have measured twice and not made the mistake that I did on the legs. LOL

  9. Wow, Connie! I love your beautiful table. The dark top against the white base is stunning. You do good work, girlfriend! I'm impressed with your carpentry skills. I would love to have the tools to do things like this. The chairs are so charming. I like the way you painted them different colors, and the different styles. It's so homey. Love too, the way the dining table and chairs sit in front of your hearth. It's so great to see you doing projects like this, and that it brings you joy to work on something that makes you feel close to Steve. I understand completely. Hugs, dear friend. Nancy

  16. You did a great job of transforming Steve's work bench into a table base then doing such a fantastic job of staining and applying so many coats of tung oil. I see Beulah was 'helping' you in the workshop. I wouldn't be surprised if she ended up with white paint on her nose.
